No freeze yet....was down in upper 30's/low 40's but no freeze. I walked out to it yesterday and its easily 12+ inches taller then me and I am 6'1"

Crazy huh? There are 12 more buds that have not opened yet....do not have a clue what kind it is as the others we had planted there dropped their seeds. This one sprouted. The parent plants has 1-2 flowers just at the top as this has several from top down. Maybe its the winter variant...LOL
I have not fertilized it and the water it has received has only been rain...

While we spent a month at the Gainesville VA, my garden froze to death, except for the herbs. I'll tear everything out and start over with some fresh soil. I had someone who fed our cat while we were gone, but it's a bit much to ask someone with a brown thumb to deal with frost blankets on/off/on/off depending on the temps.

Sometimes you just have to say to yourself...its okay, I can still go to the store and buy food.

I had a collard tree - it also froze to death. It's ok - I don't really like collard greens anyway😂 Amazingly, the jalapeno plants that were so productive last fall are bursting with green leaves. Maybe I won't need to replant those this spring. The herbs held their own, especially oregano.

On the other hand, the weeds not only survived all the freezes, but flourished. I could grow one heck of a purslane garden😉 I may have to pull the weeds, then pull out some weed killer to keep them from growing back from under new soil I'll be putting in the containers.

My peppers, all two of them, have hung on since last year. We do not eat a lot of peppers, but neighbors do and its a treat for them and goodwill on my part. I will be planting more of them soon. I am like you in the fact I am not always home and sometimes gone for up to 2-3 weeks and need things that can do things on their own. Our aero gardens are delivering us some dill, two types of basil, and three lettuce plants which is yummy as a salad and also just putting a couple leaves on a sandwich. I can leave them for about 2 weeks but they are wanting a lot of water now that they are grown. Two weeks may be tops we can be gone for them to stay alive at this point.

I'm seriously thinking about doing just bag gardening this year. It's easier to keep the weeds out and grow just the amounts I need. I can see I won't have a lot of time to devote to the garden this year, so I need to simplify. I can clear out a couple of containers and just put the bags inside them. This worked out really well with my herbs.

So...I was thinking I'd just do bag gardening, but took advantage of a nice day and evening to get 3-1/2 containers cleared of weeds, so now I'm just waiting for a couple more bags of soil and I'll be planting again. While I was weeding I found 2 tiny potatoes that had wintered over under the weeds; not enough to do anything with but cute. I'm going to try some red or gold potatoes this time, because the russets never got big enough to be really useful. I want to be able to dry pack potatoes to have in the pantry.

I am just doing bag gardening this year. and just peppers and maybe some bush beans. I cannot keep the weeds out of the 30+ bags I have now, so throwing up a bigger garden doesnt seem a good idea. Plus we are away from the house a lot working on our cargo container home on a piece of property in GA.

I finally got my dirt - and my husband is back in the hospital after emergency surgery. I did manage to get the dirt outdoors, so once he gets home in a few days, I can garden. I'm pleased to report that the containers I did get weeded are still weed-free. 😁

Husband came home from the hospital yesterday. We're both really glad to be at home and not in the hospital!

We sold our John Deere rider, so now I can start organizing the garage and, as soon as the agency gets me a trustworthy day nurse, I can get my gardening done. I STILL have a few weeds to pull in one container, but I have three containers I can plant in which is a decent start, albeit minimalistic. Herbs are like weeds - they lived through the winter and are still growing😂

I have 3 pepper plants each in a grow bag, and they have survived the winter and are still producing despite the lack of care on my part.

The jalapenos lasted until we had some sub-freezing temps, then they were toast! I wasn't here to cover them or do anything - I was in Gainesville😂 Bad plant mom!

Tonight is my best shot at gardening, since my daughter's coming in a couple of weeks and I needed to clean up the guest room this morning while the nurse was here. I did get some weeding-resistant clover pulled (again), 6 bags of soil moved into the containers and ready to dump, maybe after dinner, and then I'll plant and water it in tonight. The new LED floodlights will help me see what I'm doing. I guess I should grab some seeds from the freezer, huh?
