I ordered my grow bags from Home Depot. One bag took around half a 25-qt bag of potting soil. It wasn't full to the top when I was done (that was all the potting soil I had on hand until I went to Lowes this afternoon to get another 6 bags). When I think of the size of a 5-gallon bucket, I would say these bags aren't quite 5 gallons but they seem to be wider at the bottom than a 5 gallon bucket; however, once I water this one down and add enough potting mix to top it off, it may hold 5 gallons of potting soil. I would say there is enough soil depth to support a single tomato plant. At around $2 each, I guess I won't complain. I did order another bunch of them from a different company (plus some 10-gallon grow bags), so I can compare them once they arrive. It was way too windy today to be trying to transfer potting soil; I'm not trying to scatter soil across the yard! I guess I could fill up a 5 gallon bucket with potting soil and dump it into a bag to see the comparison, but I would likely lose a lot of the soil in the process.

Another thing I bought was various connectors for my existing zillion garden stakes (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08R7FTBNQ...roduct_details). I can use these to build a trellis for my climbing plants like beans, cukes, etc. A setup like this would be perfect for hanging trellis netting.

I had six 25-qt bags of potting soil and was able to fill twelve 5-gallon bags; however, after watering, there is another 2" of space at the top of the bags. More potting soil and more tomato cages on my schedule for tomorrow since I'm out of both!

I'm no closer to the x-gallon answer because I used ~12.5 qts/bag and it still wasn't enough, even with the addition of the soil from the plants. I would guess the 5-gallon claim is based on 20 qts [soil+water] or some other stupid formula. If I took 20 qts of potting soil and wet it completely, I believe I could cram it into a 5-gallon grow bag. Anyway, here's today's planting:

I sent the picture to one of my friends who homesteads, and she stated that she had to get some of those bags! I got another ten 5-gallon bags today, and five 10-gallon bags today. While some things may be dirt cheap, dirt is not cheap!! With the new bag stash, I should be able to get all of my new seedlings transplanted and go back to maintaining everything. Well, almost - I still need to dig up the old tropical plant bed, put down some fresh soil, and the watermelon that will take up more room than I have right now. I'll plant the cukes, spaghetti squash, zucchini, and yellow squash in the 10-gallon containers and build trellises for them.

            Patriotic Sheepdog:

I transplanted 2 kinds of cukes, zucchini, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, watermelon, and planted my black bean and some more turnips. Got my trellis set up for the climbers.

The 5 gallon bags I got from Amazon are definitely 5 gallons; the Home Depot ones aren't. The HD bag fits inside the Amazon bag with room to spare, plus it's shorter. The Amazon bag took almost the whole 25-qt bag of potting mix.

I am also looking at the Kraky method...you know anything about that?

I know what the Kraky method is but never considered it. It would likely work for you with less maintenance once set up. Raised bed containers and grow bags are miles away from where I started gardening in a tilled plot of land. For now I'm happy with what I'm doing, and everything is growing nicely, and I only have to water. The raised beds are on the irrigation system and the grow bags are very close to the garden hose.

I have Aero Gardens inside which is essentially a modified Kraky method, but am looking at experimenting with a tote outside. Looking for the best producing one, as I am partially retired (go back and help when a provider is out on vacation) so I have a bit more time to watch them.

Before I retired, I wouldn't have had time to get so involved with my garden. The parasitic nematodes were the death of my in-ground gardening, so now I spend my time filling up a variety of containers above the ground. If you do the tote outside, please post some pix!

Bought two tote yesterday (starting with two as an experiment). Need to get the other supplies to get it running. Will post pics when up and running.

Today I put 3 more grow bags behind the shed: black beans, snap peas, and red bell peppers, and another trellis A-frame. I ran out of landscape fabric, so I'll have to make a Lowes run next week so I can get the rest of my grow bags filled, set out, and planted. Just a few more and I can go straight into maintenance mode with the raised bed and grow bag gardens. Everything is growing like crazy!

So, been really busy. Had to work last week for a provider that took a vacation so not much done around the homestead. Week before had to move stuff out of our cabin that we sold. So, this week I have jumped on some things....gathering all the parts for the Kraky totes so should have everything to start those this week. Ordered 20 more grow bags so waiting on them to arrive. I also have to start working on my sons truck as he hit black ice in Nashville and smashed it up a bit. I have a solar project waiting for me as well...

Oh, ordered some dandelion seeds as I want to try them....also more seeds to plant like watermelon and spinach to try...

I hope your son is okay after his accident! You definitely have been, and are going to be, very busy. I can't wait to see your Kraky setup.

I put in 17 more seed starters: 5 snap beans, 5 black beans, 2 red & 3 green bell peppers, 2 jalapenos, and 1 butternut squash. These will all go into bags. Squirrels got into my snap bean bag, so I put up an A-frame trellis and netted it. There's nothing sprouted in those 3 bags yet, but if the squirrels keep digging in there, nothing will every sprout!

The miracle of life - or at least the miracle of plants sprouting from seeds!

This morning I checked the bag where I planted black beans last week, and I saw one sprout. I was thrilled (I'm easy to please)! After dinner, I went back to check and there are five sprouts - all in one day - and my snap beans bag has sprouts too. The temporary trellis I put up is going to have to be reworked, and since I got my second order of garden stake pole connectors today, I'll be able to set up a proper trellis. I do need to get more landscape fabric, pins, and potting mix. I still have a good-sized bunch of poles in the garden shed, so I should have enough.

I hate to stop planting, but there's a limit to how much room I have, and I need to put out another 5-10 bags for the seed starters that haven't sprouted yet. My purple globe turnips are growing and I can't wait to harvest them!

Yes, I do other things besides admire my garden, so today I cleaned out the guest room, including dragging an oversized cooler to the garage and a tub of motorhome supplies to my office closet, mopped the floor, did a couple loads of laundry, pulled some weeds in the yard, made a pan of mac & cheese, etc etc
