I bought 1 50# bag of Evins Farms winter wheat to see if it was ok. The price was about $10.50 for 50#. I got it home and looked it over. This bag is not anything I would want to eat. It had a good bit of chaff and dust. There is some corn and millet mixed in. It looks old too. Not good eats! I'll keep looking. If anyone knows about a good source around Houston please tell me. Thanks

I think that you should know that wheat, when you buy it, smells "musty" or a bit old. That's the way it is, and has nothing to do with the quality. As for the chaff and mullet, etc. thrown in, it looks like you got some stuff put together in a pretty sloppy manner. Find someone with a horse or mule or pig and trade them for something.

I know what grain smells like. This did not smell bad. It looked like it was swept from the floor. I think it was white wheat. Also there were signs that it was old. I even saw a few wheat kernels that were half hollowed out by insects. I gave it to my neighbor to feed to his horse.
I checked out the LDS cannery web site. I called them also. I will likely buy from them. They seem to be providing a great service to the community. Their prices seem good.

Okay. What kind of price did the LDS put on wheat? Is there a limit to how much you can buy? Do they have yeast in anything that's going to last? I have been thinking about going to the Amish and finding wheat there. I intended to do it this week, but I ordered a bunch of stuff and it all gets here this week, so I need to be here when it does. I finally pulled the trigger on about six or eight different products that I didn't have, plus a couple of things that I wanted but just hadn't bought. My next project is to build a solar oven and try some bread in it. If I can make that work, I should be pretty well set.

Red Winter Wheat, 25 lb bag, $6.35
I did not ask about any limit. I did not see yeast on the list. For future it would be a good idea to learn how to make a sour dough starter. You do not have to use store bought yeast.
Here is a link to the order form.

Monel, Yes the LDS In Houston will sale to, to what I call walk in's. As for Limits, I don't think they are going to run out any time soon
They have Trucks in there all the time. On canning days they will help you can your food.
They are very friendly people, and want everybody to stock up, for the road ahead, to not only be ready for themselfs but to be able to help your friends and family. You just fill out your order , pay for it, and you have to get it and load it yourself.
The link you have is the order form you fill out ..Last edited by sandfarmer; 12-24-2010, 12:02 AM.

The link you provided doesn't work for me, it says error. If it is the same online price sheet that I have seen, the prices are only as good as the date at the bottom left corner. The online price sheet is for Feb 2009! Prices may be the same, but I doubt it.
Best thing is to call the closest food distribution center and get current prices. Also ask them what their policies are for picking up. I had a friend that just showed up unannounced and they were able to work him in. They were busy as bees! They said next time for him to fax in his order and give them time to get it ready before picking it up:cool:Welcome to Tennessee, patriot state of shootin' stuff.

The LDS Cannery in Houston is located at 16333 Hafer Rd, The Phone number is 281-537-1786.
The link I gave is down or no longer good. If you search Google you can find more information.
I haven't made it to the cannery yet as it is a long drive from my home. When I do go I plan to get enough to make it worth the drive.
