  • New Sniper Caliber!!

Well it is official. The military is testing the .300 Winchester Magnum to replace the old faithful .308.

If it is approved, the military sniper family will be: .300 Win Mag; .338 Lapua Mag; .50 Browning...
I wonder if they will keep the .308 for under 750yd range???

    WOW!! :)

Hate to be the sniper that has to practice qualifying all day with a .300 Win Mag, thats going to be one sore shoulder.

    Thoughts and concerns?

They could do that if they put a muzzle brake on it. I had one, briefly. I'm a pretty big guy, and I could shoot it about five times, and I was done. That rifle beat the stuffing out of me.

They will never fully get rid of the 7.62x51. because they still use it a lot like in the M1A1 and others.

Didn't they say the same thing when the .308 took over the 30-06? I personally NEVER saw a 30-06 in any arms room after the .308 was adopted as main sniper caliper...

For just the bolt actions from what I understand, which is why they (the Army) went to the long action on the M24 anyway. They wanted the capability to upgrade to a larger cartridge if needed.

The 7.62x51 will still be around for the M110 SASS and the various DMRs.

Why bother when ya can have onea these?

Noreen Firearms Bad News (.338 LAPUA MAGNUM). Designed with the intent of taking a well-known large caliber, and being able to send it downrange accurately.

I understand the Marines bought their entire inventory from the Shot Show and civilian orders are 3 months out?

@biathlon - the original post by klayton included the .338 as one of the sniper calibers.

The .308 will continue to be one of the main weapons deployed with the scout / infantry units. The next big thing coming down the tubes for squad level weapons is the AR10 platform in .308
