  • Optics for my Rifles

I have an Aimpoint for my AR, a Burris 3.5x10x50 for my Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55. Now I want a scope for other use. Perhaps for my AR, or a Winchester M-70 .223. I have looked at the Millet TRS-1 in Magazines and online but am not satisfied that I am getting enough info. No one around here has it. Do you have it? If so, how is the quality and does it do the job. I mount everything with A.R.M.S. Lever Mounts.

There are so many Optics brands and the Ads tout the outstanding features. I'd love to standardize on Leopold, Zeiss, Nightforce, Nikon (A new release is aimed for the American shooter) or almost any of the name brand Optics but $$$$$$$$$$$ require me to pick and choose. Will the Millet TRS-1 do the job for .223 ?

I would like a .308 and Considered the R25 Remington or the DSA FN/FAL clone. I am saving to buy one or the other. Can I have your suggestions, if you now shoot either of them or another brand that you can recommend in .308 caliber semi auto. Someone recommended the American made AUG clone as high quality and a great rifle. Which scope would match up with a .308?

I welcome your comments. Like you I am sure, I can't afford to waste money on a bad decision.

    Thanks EH

    I have a Nightforce on my .338 Federal (a little overkill-but I like it)
I have a Simmons on my .22 MAG (works fine)

Thinking about buying a scope for my .22, but still undecided.

I have read a few reviews on the Millet (I don't own one) and most have been very positive. Here is one I was reading just last week.

Protecting the sheep from the wolves that want them, their family, their money and full control of our Country!

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

ATTENTION: No trees or animals were harmed in any way in the sending of this message, but a large number of electrons were really ticked off!

      NO 10-289!

Regarding a .308 Semi-Auto rifle - the new LWRC REPR is expensive, but being an owner of one - I LOVE it. It is PRECISE, reliable, and quick. I can shoot wolf 147 gr. w/o a problem in 2-3 hundred yard range and I can shoot 175 gr. BTHP match for 6-8 hundred range. I haven't shot anything further, but some have it very precise at 1000 with good loads.
It is a dual purpose weapon in my view. My deuce gear holds 4 mags of 150 gr. and 2 of 168-175 for the long range if ever needed. LIke I said, not cheap, but very nice.
Regarding a scope - I have a cheap BSA on it for now (after buying the rifle I had to wait on a nice scope), but it seems to work fine. I also have a BSA on my 10/22 that works fine.
I was planning on buying a nice Night Force, but now am looking at the PVS 14 that JHR is selling. I miss mine from the Marine Corps. 7B's suck!

Also, if looking for scopes on a .308 I recommend the forums on LWRC. Check out the REPR blogs. Much good info re: scopes.

@RyanMac: curious as to the cost of your REPR?

As for scopes, I have a NF on my .338 Federal. The scope ran a little over $1K but I LOVE IT!!

OH, sorry, forgot to give you a scope site.

Check out "sniper central" scope section, there you can view different scopes along with what style of crosshairs that scope uses. :)

Klayton - I paid 3k, but they are going about 4 I think now. Hence the reason I waited to buy a NF scope.

Another good site for Scope reviews is Snipershide. SO much info on how to shoot long range.

DPMS makes some really good 308,7.62 AR style rifles most go for under 1500. now top that with a ACOG or an US Optics scope I know that this combo will shoot much better than I can. BTW I love the REPR,I have ruined the magizine article I have on it from all the drool...

I can't answer the about either of the rifles, but need more info about what you are intending to use the rifle for. Ar you looking for more long range or a multi-purpose scope? What is your budget?

I know it is not in the same class as a NF, but I have a 2-7x35 Burris Ballistics-Plex on a 308 bolt action that I can engage targets from the muzzle to 500 yds with ease. It only runs about $175.

@ RyanMac- if the PVS 14 that JHR is selling the same as you had in the Marine Corps, maybe you can help me out, because I'm thinking about buying one, probably to go on my M1A. I want to make sure I understand exactly how this works. Does the unit swivel up or disconnect for day time use? I guess you would mount this behind any scope as long as you have the room to mount both, and install or remove it as desired, without having to worry about getting your scope out of whack. I want to make sure I am understanding that right before I drop the money on one. Also, someone told me there is a lifespan on night vision equipment, and that wears out kind of fast. Any info you can give me would be great. Thanks a lot in advance.

I have never used a Millet, but shoot with a guy who has one. He has used it for over 6 months now. The scope functions well and is holding up. You cannot compare it to a Leupold, Nightforce, or other high end scopes. The Millet scopes run between $300 to $500 - Nightforce is well over $1,000 and can be as much as $2,000. Hardly a fair comparison. For the money, the Millet appears to be a decent scope. But inexpensive variable scopes have more things to go wrong with them, than a fixed power.

In .308 semi, I use a Rock River LAR 8. My gun is very accurate and reliable. Once again, is it fair to compare it to a rifle costing 2 1/2 times the cost? I have shot 1/4 MOA with my Rock River. (I made a video of my Rock River, you can view it on my youtube channel)

The FN clones can be a hit or miss proposition. Some of them are put together right and others are not. But they are priced really nice. Are you handy with gun repairs? Knowing a little about guns, is helpful. Especially with the clones.

I always think of guns as being mission (purpose) specific. I also believe that buying guns is an evolutionary process. If you shoot a lot, or you are a prepper, you might have to purchase several guns to find the one that meets your needs.

Bottom line. What's your budget? And do you need the high end stuff? What are you going to do with the gun?
EXPECT THE BEST - PREPARE FOR THE WORSE

                            KEEP ON PREPPING

Bull- sorry I didn't see this sooner.

You can mount the PVS14 to a weapon and have it back off the weapon in about 3-5 seconds. From head mount to weapon mount, to helmet mounted to handheld pocketscope style, this will do it all.

I've mounted mine on AK's behind ACOG's and a Aimpoint like Sig Sauer red dot and on an M1A lined up behind a Trijicon ACOG. For day use you just turn a screw and pull the 14 off and pack it till the night.

This new technology- the Pinnacle Autogated third gen is truly remarkable. I hesitated buying any 3rd gen stuff for years and honestly I'm glad I did. A few years back this new 3rd gen technology came out. I sold all my 2nd gen stuff to buy my first 14 and later purchased another one. This is American, not some foreign parts, some American parts. Mil spec, submersible to 66 feet, you can drop it off the back of a truck, etc. Made for use by G.I.'s if that makes sense ;) Also, since it's military spec, you'll be able to find parts for it DECADES into the future. You have a 5 year warranty that comes with it, but since most of us think long term (or should), it's nice to know that since it's still in current military use, the military will stock parts for it for years. A perfect example is the fact that it's just now starting to get hard to find parts for the old pvs4's from the 1960's- It took almost 50 years for parts to get hard to find for them. Why? Cause the military stocks thousands of spare parts for stuff like that! Always go with mil spec units for the above reasons. A lot of what people CALL PVS14's contain a mix of aftermarket or proprietary parts, this one doesn't.

This newer technology is rated for 40,000 to 50,000 hours of constant use. It really doesn't compare at all to commercial crap or Russian stuff. I regularly demo these at campouts, hikes, etc. I get a lot of guys that "oh yeah I was in the military I know about PVS5's" then when they look through a 14 the first word is normally "Wow!" or if not, an expletive ;)

They are an investment for sure, and do not replace training at night by any means. However I think we should get every "edge" we can in a fight. Also, think about being able to bug out on foot in the middle of the night, being able to see everything going on around you versus being at the mercy of an ambush during the middle of the day. Many possibilities for actual use of this item. It's not a "toy" to people who realize what you could really do with this technology ;)
