  • Army Sending New Airburst Gun to 101st

The Army is set to field the first prototype of a new weapon that could deny the protection of buildings and canals to an enemy in Afghanistan that frequently uses the cover of local villages to fire on American troops.
The XM-25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System is a new shoulder-fired gun that shoots a fist-sized round packed with an explosive warhead that detonates over the heads of enemy forces at pre-determined ranges.

Great concept. Sounds like cooking off a grenade before throwing it to have it burst over the heads of troops in trenches. I don't even know if they teach that any more???

This gun has been in development for several years or is already being used. I remember seeing if not this gun one very close to it where the number of rotations the round should make was programmed into the chip (this was calculated by a laser range finder) and when it that number it detonated. I think I saw this weapon in Popular Mechanics or some of Popular ________ magazine. EMP could possibly make this weapon just a really nice paper weight :).

This is way better than cooking off a grenade, more accurate in where it will detonate. Cooking off really is to reduce the likelihood that an enemy could return your grenade to you before it did its job. Spies Like Us and Saving Private Ryan as well as others, it all depends on the fuse. I think we were told 3-5 second fuses on Frag's in '93.

They still taught cooking off but would not let us do this during basic, circa '93.
