  • What parts do you stock or have you had to change in your firearms?

This is simular to a earlier thread about to what firearms you have had problems with.

I would like to get recomendations on what parts to stock as replacement and or what firearms parts have you replaced already on the ones you own?

I relpace my springs in my glock mags every 2 yrs and a little less on AR mags and I keep any springs that are not having issues. I have a few packs of guts for the glocks and a good assortment of AR springs and pin kits, havent used them in the years of AR/glock ownership but who knows. I have an original glock 17 from early 80s and we put a "parts update kit" in it a long time ago. I replaced the mag catch in 98 after experimenting with metal mags (bad idea) . I cant tell you how tens of thousands of rds it has had thru it. It is still my primary weapon and i shoot competition every month with it. I keep extra scope rings, screws etc. and usually have an extra cheap 4x scope around somewhere. I also have an extra solid stock for an AR. Back in the day I broke an ejector on my 1911 and my old mauser 30-06 once before on each which made single shots outta both, so that is something to think about. I could make one now with developed skills but not back then.
Spring kits would be a first purchase IMHO.

I would stock any springs that your firearms might have. I would also think about high wear or breakage parts like fireing pins, extractors, ejectors, etc.. I would also have extra pins. An easy way to have an extra set of parts is to just buy a complete parts kit for the style of rifle that you have.

Depends on what you have....I went to a Glock store we have here. I have all same model and caliber so I had him get me all the parts I would need to replace in a pinch...but I also have 2 of everything as I keep one for back up and parts also....For my milsurplus stuff...like AK's and Mosins...I look for parts kits and then buy one...but like I said I have 2 of everything already so essentially I have 2 sets of parts...Depends on what your looking for ....for example I found a Polish AK47 armors kit at sportsmansguide.com a while back....was 199.00 with enough to fix 2 ak47s...just gotta shop around

I have a couple parts kits for the ak's but I don't keep much of anything else except parts for specialty weapons. Hunting weapons are my greatest concern but most mechanical parts that are prone to wear are easily repaired with the know how. Sidearms and assault riffles, if you're using them to the point of wearing out I suspect you can find your parts next to the bodies that were once holding them.

lol I should include a disclaimer in my siggy. I never intend to offend anyone but I'm a realist.

keeping on topic I lean towards the weapons or at minimum the same caliber that my enemies might use. 7.62x39 is the original NATO rd but 5.56 is the new rifle standard. I was working in Louisiana shortly after Katrina surveying for new communication infrastruture and met several National Guard members who where equpped with AK47's carrying the 7.62 rd. My step brother was also issued a .45 during his service in Iraq. The AK47 is the most widely used rifle period. There are what, 11 variants I believe?

realisticaly, survive the firefight and there are both weapons and rounds for the taking. I'm not suggesting that you leave yourself unprepared but that you think logically about what circumstances you will be selecting your weapon. Buy a remy 700, practice and stock up on that.

No offense taken DogofWar.....I am not one to beat around the bush either..keeping it real is the best way......I think having spare parts is a good idea...but not if it takes away from buying other things like food, water, meds ammo etc. I think most people will not engage in the type of firefights that will require your gun to hit that point...like I said in another post..the idea is not to engauge in firefights unless you have to...even tweekers can get lucky with lead flying at you....obviously if the fight comes to you...do what you gotta do and take the fight to them survive and win. When its over and done with you are correct though scavange and take what you need, you can trade with it...give it to a friend that has none, keep it for a rainy day etc. I mean realistically they obviously don't need it any more.
