Recently in my email inbox, I received pictures and video of an interesting rifle, the Ruger Gunsight Scout rifle. If you are not familiar with it, the rifle is “the one rifle to have if you only had one.” Come on, who of us only has one? Anyway, the concept is good, a short rifle in .308, 10rd. mag fed, bolt action, patterned after the Jeff Cooper scout rifle concept. I looked up the price, and WOW, $1000+. So that made me think, what other, less expensive options would be available?

The Cooper Scout idea was a rifle that was less than 39”, less than 7.5 lbs., forward mounted scope, and .308 caliber. I knew where to go to find answers. My buddy has a few rifles in his collection, so we went through his safe and we found two short rifles.
One was a Chinese Nagant 53. 40 inches (one inch longer) and 9 lbs.(1.5 lb. over), and chambered in 7.62x54r, close enough to a .308. It had a replacement stock put the scope forward. Average current price is about $300, but they can be had for less I hear.

The other option was a Norinco SKS paratrooper carbine. It was a post-ban model, no bayonet lug and the thumbhole stock was replaced with a Tapco collapsible. With the stock collapsed, 35” and 7lbs. Within the specs except for caliber. Average price is about $525. I haven’t seen one of these for sale in a while. Note: uses AK mags

What other affordable rifles can we come up with for those of us on a budget?

If it uses AK mags it's a sks-d ...Maybe an MBA.
    Different than a normal sks.

    I rock and FR8 .....
    M44
    And pre-75 win 94'
    For my short "bush" rifles.

Thanks for the info Protus. I am going to try to get him to sell me his sks-d. It has a TAPCO Intrafuse collapsible stock, and he has a few of the "shorty" detachable mags. If I read info on the nine two two r correctly, a stock and or grip only adds one or two points; one for the stock, one for the grip if counted separately out of 10 pts. that is if the collapsible stock doesn't make it evil. Those counts are for a whole-nother thead. I traded for a 94 last year; it's been in the closet since. What makes the pre-75 better?

"Scout" Rifles seem to be popping up a lot lately. Between the "IN" gun guy you-tube celebrities, Trainers, and forums I have seen a great uptick in Scout Rifle discussions and videos. I guess this is going to be the new fad. No offense Bill, I like them and want one. Just not now... other priorities. Though I get the thinking. If HildaBeast gets in Office There will be a mad dash for everything Assault rifles. Some want the bolt actions now to avoid the rush if a ban on semi autos comes... Im looking into the lever action for this. Tube fed and no evil features like a Bolt gun with detachable mags.
        Yup, Scout Rifles getting popular.

I bought a enfield years ago in 308 , made in india. Cut off most of the stock .barrel to 18 remount front sight added rear peep sight, Still heavy, so took off the wood, Ramline had light weight stocks for 39 buck s. This reduced wt. to 6.5 pounds . left off top hand guard pc. mounted a pc of weaver mount to back sight base to put red dot on. Doctor at the time. still under 7 pounds and came with a 10 rd mag. Did not like how safety worked but can't have it all. Shoots 1.5 inch groups from sand bags but the red dot is not as a scope for this. Most enfields were .303 but india had a .308 version that was good . It is easy to use , not heavy was cheap at the time as the gun was half the price of the doctor sight. Bore was perfect maybe never fired, out wear though was insane, any way I don't know if ramline still makes this stock as it was two pc for the enfield. only real draw back was it kicked like he@@.

Mines pre 75. Guess it was before they went with that side eject and hammer safety junk.
