We all have our favorite guns out there and for whatever purpose we may have. I currently don't have a varmit gun so I've been doing my research. Which selling guns at work really does help and have narrowed it down to a Howa 1500 in 22-250 with a 4-16x50 scope bull barrel. The other is a Savage Axis in the same caliber. Anyone have experience with either one of these. The guns purpose is to have something that shoots a lite bullet and capable of 500yards. Which I hear is near its effective max. In my research that one country pick the round for use by thier snipers and that it's possible to easily go through Level III plus body armor. I'd really appreciate everyone's opinions on my choice and reasoning.

Get a 223 as it's life is longer , ammo always will be around , is for the most part a tac driver easier on the leade in the bore , Easier out to 350 to shoot, and I have taken p dogs out to 500, but it is a reach with either one, uses less powder same bullets as 22-250 AD NAUSEM. My 2 cents.

No one else have an opine.!! Just so you know I have had 3 , 22-250 over the years. Shot the barrels out of 2 and made the 3 rd into an ackly imp.. Just gave away 300 empty brass to a local fellow who bought one. Brass was new 22 years ago still in boxes. Rifles , 1 was a rem 700,1 was a howa and 1 was a custom build on a 98 action. After many years I went with the 223. I have a friend in UK who wanted a 22-250 but I talked him into a 223 and he loves it because of the great groups he gets and the easy reloading he gets from it . He claims to shoot fox at over 300 yds and rabbits in excess of 250 yds. Oh well have fun whatever you have.

Kinda a generic answer but its the truth. Get the firearm you shoot the best with. Weather handgun, rifle, shotty, etc.
Yes I have purchased This way... Love my 1911s but IM more proficent with a Glock. Same with caliber, get the one you shoot best with. Lots of trial and error here but lots a trigger time as well. Borrow rent etc. till you find the one that fits you.

Back in the 70's a friend of mine had a 22-250 Remington, with a 24x scope and bipod. I have seen him shoot groundhogs over 600 yards away from the loft in his barn. His was a tack driver and he was excellent with his. I personally would not want one and like mentioned before would go with a .223 instead.

Howa 1500 is a good rifle. Mine is in 30-06. I've had it for 35 years. I put a new stock and scope on it 2 years ago and it's like a new rifle.
As for caliber. I'm kinda of the .223 mindset as well. Brass is easier to come by and based on the powder required for reloading it seems to be the more efficient caliber."One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.

Heaven forbid the Zombies invade, But no matter the enemy 5.56 is usable in .223 at least mostly as I did blow the bolt face off a target 40X years ago and rem asked me not to shoot mil spec any more but it works fine in my other .223's I've had. So bend over and pick up the equipment people don't need any more.!! Not to many foreign troops will have 22-250.
