  • Hey AK guys! Need advice on Century guns

I'm considering picking up an AK variant and I'd like to get some wisdom from experienced AK owner/shooters.

I'm considering one of Century's C39 AK's- interested in both the rifle and the pistol version with an 'arm brace'. They advertise that the guns are American made and the reviews I've seen appear to be positive BUT...

The gun shop I hang around in had one come in for repair, the customer had a case head separation (after firing less than a magazine through a new gun) and wasn't able to extract the case from the chamber- neither could the gunsmith at the shop (40 plus years experience and highly skilled guy- I saw everything he tried and all that was left was cutting it out with a chamber ream and he didn't want to risk it- told the kid to send it back to Century since they had been willing to warranty it if the GS couldn't fix it).

It has me leery, I'm thinking the chamber might have been improperly cut in the first place, too tight maybe? I know the monkeys at CAI don't have the best rep but lately the reviews have painted a picture of a company cleaning up their act.

Anyway, any hands-on experience with these guns would be appreciated; or other suggestions for comparable guns.

        BDB,
I looked into the Century Arms AK's earlier in the year. I have been wanting a second AK-47 style rifle for a while. Two is one one is none and all... I decided to stay clear of Century. I was a Big FAL guy back during the Hay-day's of parts kits, etc.. Century had a bad reputation for producing bad out of spec firearms then. I had one of those, and I purchased a CETME manufactured by them that had a out of spec./shaved bolt. I replaced with a G-3 bolt/carrier and it runs fine to this day. I personally just don't trust them enough to purchase from them again. They may have improved but Im not spending hard earned money on them again.
Jim Fuller at rifle Dynamics is working on another all US made produced AK. The US produced Trunion is all they are waiting on from T&E to produce "at competitive pricing" or you can roll your own with them right now, in their AK builder classes. Im going to save and wait for their production rifle.
Not knocking the new Century rifle, just going with my past expierences with them.

Here is another positive review, from a gear reviewer I like/trust. He is no nonsense, but watch out for some mild language. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU3LQ2m8t8Y

I have 2 century AK's and they have never given me a ounce of trouble BUT I would trade them both and some ounces of silver for a Arsenal Inc. WHY??? Because Arsenal is the best you can get for under $1200.. Im a AR guy but don't get me wrong. The AK is a superb tool and only a clown would claim otherwise..

My AK47 is from CAI. It was one N PAP rifles from the Zastava factory that was built with a single stack bolt. The rifle experience multiple FTF from the double stack mags it came with. I contacted CAI, they gave a tracking number and a mailing label to send them the rifle. I got the rifle back 3 weeks later. I've since put about 400 rounds through without an issue.

If you like to customize your firearms I would caution you to do research on the rifle to make sure it accepts after market products. The N-PAP is not friendly to after market products. Example: it does not have the traditional tang where the butt is bolted to the stamped receiver so a great number of after market stocks will not fit my rifle. So, just keep that in mind.

"One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.

If your paying more than say $700. for anything that bears the Century name, you may want to just save up a little bit more and consider an Arsenal.

All on this page and fine choices. "I know this fella that really likes AKs and...." let's just say most of those models on that page have proven reliable, nice rifles.

The 107-31 was/is on sale regularly for $995.

Yes you probably won't find the Christmas special of 08 or 09 happening again with Russian rifles sub $500. Well definitely not with the Russian rifles.

The AK market has changed a good bit, with more actually produced in the U.S. All the black rifle cult types that said the AK was a flash in the pan in the US gun market have even realized Misha's design is here to stay in the U.S.

Now if someone would just open an ammo plant maybe utilizing illegals who will work for less wages, we could get some cheap US ammo and all would be well. LOL Just kidding OSHA...

Have two zastava n-pap's and they are both great. I paid 499 at a gun show recently for it. I have have put about 300 rounds threw each of them and like them enough to use as a MBR. However, I would like to point you towards the cz2008. presently Palmetto State Armory has em for 399, and they rock. Short piston AK-like action means very little felt recoil. My 7 year (a big kid for 7) can shoot it just fine offhand. The deal came with 5 magazines, bayonet, cleaning kit, mag pouch, etc. for 399. I would trade both my zastava's for vz2008's in a heartbeat. It is a milled receiver, bolt locks back on last round fired, safety isnt some ridiculous 5 inch of sheet metal. Here is the gotcha...It fires a none AK magazine. Looks very much like an AK mag, but it not. however the mags are only $20 buck apiece. and for that 399 it comes with 5. Here is a video about the rifle. I just love them. I think there are others places to buy these as well but I bought mine at PSA.

i just cant get behind a non AK AK. If it won't take standard mags and standard repair parts I wont put it into the survival arsenal. Now if its a gun just for fun shootin then thats another story. My 91 Mauser and 303 British are two such guns
