  • Why ammo hasn't been a problem for me

"You shoot a lot, how do you find ammo to do that?" Was a question I got not that long ago.

Well, first and foremost, I'm not lazy and I don't hesitate.

A few years ago, when X39 was over $300. a case and impossible to find then, a friend called me with a tip about a place 3 hours away that had X39

"$200. a case? Are you sure?" Wow! OK, call the place up, yes indeed, 3 cases left, big store clearance getting out of firearms and ammo type deal. Many would have done the "well it's only 3 cases and..." justification for not making the drive. Hell no, I'll take it!!! Call the place up-

"I appreciate it sir, can I pay you over the phone with a CC and I will immediately get on the road but it will take me 3 hours to get there." Guy says no just come on, I'll hold them for you.
Got his name, he was some manager. Thought to my self, "damn I hope I don't make a six hour trip and it's gone." Took the leap of faith and was rewarded with more than 3 cases- "there is a broken case over there, we can price it out at the case price." Sure, let's do it.

Watch prices regularly online. Ammoman.com normally has the best when you consider shipping is included in price.

$225. a case a while back, didn't really "need" any but yeah I do a helluva lot of shooting so got a little bit more.

Russia/Ukraine mess starting up a few months ago, POTUS says "sanctions" a couple times. Writing is on the wall. Order a few more cases as money permits. $225-240. case. I don't obsess about paying $10- 20. more at times, just get it in house. I'll waste $20. on some stupid crap this week as most of us do regularly and don't bat an eye.

Airplane downed over there. Uh oh, maybe it's time to get more? Ammoman- $225. case sale. Got a few more cases. Go back the next day- gone, every bit of it. Oh well, this happens regularly and this is why I buy. Then there is the news, Izmash and couple other Russian companies "sanctions." Don't think Wolf/Tula was specifically listed, but give it time.....

Ammoman.com out, check Aim. Ouch, some Ukraine "Red army" stuff but pretty damn pricey. OK, buy smaller but the important thing is to buy.

Procrastinating relatives calling me "what happened to the $225. ammo you sent out on text last week" My response- "why TH didn't you buy then? It's gone." Offer to share the overpriced Ukraine stuff from Aim- "I'll wait." Give them the normal "don't be a procrastinator" talk. Told some friends to check Walmarts.

I didn't even realize I did it, but wife says both me and the boy look at ammo counter every time in store. Usually don't buy X39 there cause of the stupid X number of boxes limit. They dropped that, good timing :)

Everyone is complaining their walmart doesn't have any. I find 23 boxes at one of mine. Three days later in another city I find 25 boxes. Between these purchases and the online purchases, I have training ammo for at least a year or so. Why? Cause I didn't hesitate, I wasn't lazy, I put in the leg work in driving around.

It's not manna, it's not going to fall from heaven right into your lap. You have to not be lazy, you have to leave the cave go and kill something and drag it home. You have to be patient yet persistent. You have to be ready to purchase- keep sticking 1's and 5's in that cookie jar and regularly buy ammo with it.

If your training regularly- which you should- you need to buy ammo regularly. Yes this sometimes means paying more than your used to. The days of $70. a case or even $150. a case ARE GONE. Don't be an idiot and try to wait for such prices, you probably won't find them again. The $200. a case clearance deal was worth a six hour drive.

Talk/text/email/send smoke signals with your friends regarding availability. It behooves you to have your close friends armed well and with enough ammo to train. Share the info. If you go to a store and find 20 boxes but can only afford 10, call a friend WHILE you are standing there. If he's close and you can sport it, buy the lot and have him bring you cash.

Take care of your friends/contacts that help you with this. 7-9 years ago a friend from the board here found a bunch of cases of X39 at an Academy store elsewhere in the state. He called, price was awesome- $150. a case. He was nice enough to pick up for me and I paid him back promptly. He's gotten hard to find body armor at cost, Mountain House at cost and some crazy deals on other stuff I can find. Why? Cause he hooked me up. One hand washes the other. You find a deal, share it. (Smart) people will remember your kindness and re-pay it.

If your friend picks up ammo for you, pay him back QUICKLY. Preferably that day if possible. He's probably going out on a limb to do this for you, don't leave him hanging. He will remember that next time (good or bad).

Feel free to share good deals you find on the forums here also.

Good advice....my brother does this as well...now since he has a stick or two in the same calibers that I have. In turn I run into town and see a deal he gets a text and my local like minded buddies get an email /text.
Splitting cases has helped friends out as well. If there's a deal even on say something like 54r...even though it ain't a main round I run...if it gets him several hundred and I get a few hundred to top off an odd ball round I've been doing it.
Then again I cleared out a China mart more than once when 100 packs just busted 20$ and figured buy now or cry later.

Lil funny. Was packing up some 39.... found 500 rounds of 9 in with it...I was in that grab and run phase when I packed it away year or two back...LOL.

Other than training ammo, I've been putting up a mix of X39 and mags and 9mm and G-lock mags. Two 30rd magazines are better than nothing packed in an ammo can with X39, 9mm and a few Glock mags.

I'm behind the curve on weapons/ammo.

but I've sure noticed that supply is readily available NOW.
          (except for .22)
and prices are for sure reasonable...
and considering the recent price run up
          and lack of availability...
this sure appears to be a LOW on this commodity...

          time to buy!

Wish I had the cash available to take advantage of some of the deals I have seen recently/see from time to time.

I bought a lot of things years back. I was working, had money, and prices were good. I still buy, but not like the old days.

I am noticing 22LR bulk packs becoming more available locally... Most places limit the bulk packs to one per person per day. I have been able to re-stock the empty places in the ammo cans from the 22LR I shot up and could not replace...

I see 5.56, 9mm and .40 everywhere, which is a good thing to see. But zero to very little true "military surplus" ammo like in the old days. The prices on 5.56mm seem to be going down too...

But troubles lurks in all corners of the globe, at what seems to me to be unprecedented levels less for World Wars... So the price could jack up fast and shelves bare with just a whisper of a ban or import block...

the frustrating part RMPL is that soo many people will not learn from this so recent lesson... BUY NOW!!!... don't cry later about prices or shortages because those of us who do stock up..... WE DONT CARE because we told you so. Ammo is coming down so buy it, it's not rocket surgery just get it done and if you dont have the cash to do it then don't complain later ,, sell something but get it done.

Even if it is three boxes of 50 round 22LR (a local retailer limit), pick three boxes up every time you go in there, even make a quick stop as you drive by for three boxes... It adds up, and anyone can afford $2.50 per box times 3 boxes...

If even you buy a 5.56mm bulk pack once a week, it too adds up.

Unless you shoot as much as Lowdown3 and family... LOL! Then sell the milk cow...

The AMMO BUYING FRENZY of 2015 is well in swing... If you didn't buy any M855 62g. "green-tip penetrator," then you are SOL... (although M855 is one of my least favorite military ammo types)

M193 55g FMJ, my common round favorite, is also purple unicorns...

Unless you want to pay top $$$...

Even Wolf and other commy ammo is vaporware...

This thread warned you, I hope you didn't miss out when it got cheaper there for awhile...

over the past few years, due to some health concerns, I have not been shooting as much as I used to. I did pick up some more 55 grain M193 for a good price recently. I have a huge amount of M855 NATO stuff stashed away. Not my favorite either, but I have it.
Not really looking to buy any more, and if prices spike way up, may sell some of what I have, to finance other purchases.

None of my rifles seem to like the stuff, but wrote my politicians for what good that may do. Buy ammo in smaller quantities lately. But still buy here and there. Gotta stock back up on reloading components again as well.

On a whim the other day I decided to buy a little more X39. Was in that "maybe I shouldn't" mindset but did anyways.

Went to ammoman last night and they were sold out of all x39. They were showing some of the "banned" ammo though.

The ammo discussion reminds me of a quote from John Rockefeller (paraphrasing here).

When asked once, "How much money is enough money?" He replied, "Just a little bit more."

I suppose the same goes for ammo.
