  • 9mm 1911- thoughts or stories?

I've got a chance to score a Citadel 1911 in 9mm, anyone got any hands-on experience with them? Or with 9mm 1911's in general?

    Thanks

I am by no means an expert but my thoughts are:

    What is your intended use?

Target, Cheaper Training for full power 1911, competition or just cool to have... then YES. Reasons - the 1911 has an awesome design, for being over 100 years old. It has an AWESOME TRIGGER design PERIOD. With a great trigger many can shoot them more accurately than many off the rack triggers that are not so smooth.

But if you are intending this 9mm has a self defense or WROL then I would want a modern double stack for the added capacity and availability of parts... Many modern pistols trigger designs are not as nice out of the box with a little money and time they can be almost as good... And I find the 1911 a nice looking pistol (with the right finish) I have never thought of the G17/XD/M&P as good looking.

I would say it depends on your intended use...

If you are looking at them for cost then maybe you can take a look at the Canik TP9 . Search youtube and you can find a review or two on it...

I am in agreement with NYP. The 1911 in 45ACP is without a doubt a proven battlefield sidearm. There is no questioning its pedigree. The Citadel in 9mm, IMO, is good for training but not for defense when there are other 9mm's on the market that offer double stack mags. For example, my XDM in 9mm holds 19 in the mag. I carry 2 mags in my satchel along with one in the pistol. That's 57 rounds of happiness. I believe the Citadel has an 8 round mag so you'd have to carry 7 mags plus 1 in the pipe just to have the same amount of firepower. I realize the XDM is more expensive than the Citadel but you can pick up a new Ruger SR9 for $400 - $450 or you can find a used P85/89 for less than $300.00.

To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.

My main pistol is a Springfield 1911 in .45acp. As stated above, it's a proven and reliable firearm. Of all my pistols, it's the most forgiving as far as ammo. That said, I had a chance to rent a Springfield 1911 in 9mm at the local indoor range last summer. It was problematic with the range ammo, which is what they require you to use in a rental. Not sure if it was a poorly maintained rental firearm or crappy range ammo. My .45 goes through the range ammo just fine.

My favorite carry pistol is my Les Baer TRS 1911 .45acp. I have been carrying 1911s as a primary sidearm for right at 35 years now, and have no plan to change. The reason? Reliable stopping power in a reliable pistol with impeccable handling and natural pointing characteristics. Those virtues, plus at least 600,000rds of practice over the years, are why I'm still around today. Self defense with a firearm stopped being theory to me when I found myself in the wrong place at the wrong time....or maybe it was the right place at the right time for the others in that store. I guess it depends on who is paying for the lawyer (yes, even in a clear self-defense situation there will be a lawyer with his hand in your wallet. Would have been cheaper to let the bad guys have my money). A 1911 in .45 made sure I went home that night....or really, early the next morning after giving all my reports. A 9mm, as much as I like the round for some conditions, would not have allowed me to successfully stop bad guy number one quickly enough to engage bad guy number two before he figured out who was shooting back. That reality will always impact my carry decisions. I have several 9mms (actually have my Kahr PM9 on me now since I am in dress clothes), so I'm not a hater, but for defense I usually opt for more power when practical. If you're snagging the Citadel because it's a deal and you want a new toy, then go for it. If you are intimidated by the .45 but handle a 9mm well, then all of the other attributes of the 1911 still apply and make it a good choice. If you would rather have a .45, but are snagging the 9mm just to get a 1911, then I'd hold off and get one chambered in the round that it made its reputation with.

Folks, I was looking for hands on experience with 9mm 1911's.

While, I appreciate your love of the .45 ACP 1911, you're wasting your breath- preaching to the choir, you might say. I own.... more than a couple and have been shooting them for close to 30 years now; just never had an opportunity to try one in 9mm, that's all.

Good to see that lots of us love the old Gov't. Model though!!

Thanks all- oh yeah, BTW, the Citadel is a great gun and now lives in my safe.
