  • shtf guns...a what if-

what if you couldnt have your beloved ar,ak,hk,fal etc.
what would you run and how?
how would your plans change, gear change etc?

we all try and be as ready as we can but how/what would you change and do you train for it?

i got thinking this with all the "ban" talk and junk over the last year or so.
we all got hundreds if not more tied up in gear that made/set for xyz gun(s) that run on mags..

for example a while back i made a set up to deal with this.
ive got some old crusty mil surps laying around. 7.92 and x51. the 7.92 is easy fix,,have a few leather mag pouches that were made for it and bandoliers. while not perfect it'd work. sides that alice gear with shallow canteen/ifak bags work to hold loose ammo or ammo on stripper clips.

the better set up was a fluke/joke.
i took an old sks chest rig. x51 will fit on 7.92 striiper clips or come that way(least assuie 762 did) anyway. my x51 is on a 98 action so the 792's work. only modification was to take some closed cell foam and put it in the bottom of the pouch. this allows two strippers per pouch. 10 rounds each,,50 rounds on your chest.
    not perfect.
but combine that with a battle belt/sidearm,,i wouldnt feel to under gunned ,,better than a stick?

just food for thought..loading a bolt gun via strippers can be fast,,if done right,,granted its 5-10 rounds ...but better to be ahead of the game then wait til your stuck on game day trying to figure it out....

if I can still have 10 round mags for bolt guns then id go with a fast scout rifle maybe a 308 with a 1.5-6 variable lit reticle scope. Maybe the burris MTAC 1.5-6 it has BDC for the 308. If not then I would go for a lever gun in a light recoil but flat shooting round, maybe 243?? or even the tried and true 30-30.. Then I would have one redone to accept the 7.62x39

I have a couple bolt guns (those "crappy Savage" types :) ) but I doubt their usefullness for much other than their intended use.

No semis in this scenario? We use to have to qualify with 12 gauge slugs at 100 yards. Not sure if my older eyes could do that now though.

Hard question, I'm not a huge shotgun fan, but I would probably consider one.

A good slug gun would work with an extended tube so its not jest 3-5 rounds. I could do minute of beer keg at 100 with ghost ring sights but that's a smooth bore 18 inch "riot " style shotgun. Problem would be penetration sat that distance running a shorter smooth bore.
The savage and ruger scouts would be nice or even a old ishy. 2a enfield. Extra mags for both. Etc. Looking back 125$ I thought was to much for one....now I wish I had got one or three vs the 7.92 98's.that I got laying around

My hobby is the study of military history. And by extension the accumulation of military surplus firearms. I have "a few" of those plus regular civilian weapons.
The premise is no M1A, AK, etc.
Number one would be my M1 Garand.
If not that then my Mauser K98k - one of the sweetest, slickest bolt actions ever made, the Gold Standard for military bolt actions.
Of course, every serious rifleman should have a lever action 30-30, either Marlin or Winchester. Or both. A lot of situations can be handled with a 30-30.

thats a good question and one i've contemplated myself lately. I think I'd get a remington 7600 pump rifle with 10 shot mags and a pump shotgun like a 12ga.

The 7600/760 are good guns. All the folks in canukistan hunt with them. But they aren't built that great IMO. That's going from great gdads. Gun..grand fathers and the two my dad owns. If the 760 has mags like the semi autos it is not a great set up for stress.....
Mosin are great my Hungarian m44 is great...the 91/30... a pole lance LOL
both work but fast reloads suck.

What's wrong with the enfield isshy. 10 round mags easily available. VERY FAST bolt and battle proven mount a 1.5-6 illum reticle on it and you have a decent scout rifle that can make solid hits from contact to -500 with no problem. Plus it's 7.62 Ammo is readily available and it's rugged.

Nothing wrong with a 2a....like I.posted earlier wish I picked up a few back in da day. I had converted """tanker "" one ...but I got rid of it. Nice gun but at the time I wanted some different things.

Not armory topic but how would your tactics change...roe per say...more scout...recon..than "oh there's five zombies....lets waste em ' " roe.
I know most here aren't dumb...but I know on my end clearing a house with a bolt gun would suck......cept with the shotty. Or m44...always just go all stabby with that one LOL

as far as tactics go it would certainly change them. Im in no hurry now to get into a multiple threat engagement at close ranges but I would be down right apprehensive about doing it with a bolt bun. A lever gun or pump even a shotgun would definitely be in order for cqb. It would make it almost impossible to have a single weapon that can perform well under multiple tactical scenarios. If I can still have a semi as long as it doesnt have a removable mag then the M1 garand is THE clear choice!!
