  • Got a new weapon.......sort of.

I scrap metals to recycle, and come across all sorts of other things that people are throwing out that are still usable. Many of these items fall by their nature often under the broad blanket of preparedness and survival gear. One such item that I recently happened upon in the trash, was a good fiberglass, recurve bow.
The bow itself is in great shape, but the bow string was shot. I plan on taking a trip to Bass Pro Shop soon to see if they have what I want. If not, then there are a couple of other places that I can check. Hopefully at least one of them will have what I want.

Since finding this little gem it has occoured to me that now besides the "middle B"of B,B,&B, archery supplies will be something that I'll need to add to my gear purchase list for hunting and protection. I had thought of some of this stuff before, but never too seriously. Now it's a bit different since this find. But,like any weapon system...you've got to have ammo to feed it, and repair parts for failures and breakdowns. Although it is simple compared to a compound bow or a crossbow, there will come a time when it will need another string, or is damaged by a break. Either way, I figure that now that I have it, I'll need to look and see about a spare and several strings, as well as plenty of arrows in both target and hunting heads.

I know it can amount to some serious FRN's taken out of the old wallet, but it will be well worth it to have a more quiet weapon at our disposal if needed.

That is an excellent find! What is the poundage on the bow? It should be stamped on the top limb just above the grip. IMO, a fiberglass recurve makes for a better EOTWAWKI option than compound or crossbow. You actually touched on the reason, replacing the string on a recurve is a simple affair compared to a compound bow. Plus, fewer moving parts means less things can go wrong with it. What you lose in power and accuracy you gain in reliability and longevity. Ever see Byron Ferguson shoot? I think he uses a "bare" bow but he is insanely accurate with it.

Anyways, fortune has smiled on you.... Congratulations!

Great find. I have several bows. If the draw weight isn't to high, you can make your own string. do a search for Flemish twist bow strings. There are several other ways to make a string.
One of the reasons I like a bow is the usually quicker follow-up shot vs a crossbow.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

It's a 35 lb. draw weight. And no, I've never even heard of Byron Furguson there Tackleberry. Of course there are a lot of NAMES in the archery sports that I don't know, but that's the way with every sport. There's always some key players that stand out because of their great proficiency within their fields of choice be it string weapons, firearms, or bladed weapons. And I'm thinking the same way there on the moving parts. Fewer is always best.

Thanks to you there EX121 for the information on the bow string. Any information on being able to make replacement parts is always welcome around here. As a matter of fact, I have some cordage that just might come in handy for that particular purpose in an emergency. And later on I want to study a bit on skills for making all parts of archery equipment from the bows to the strings, and even the arrows themselves.

Isn't Byron Furgeson the guy who can hit an aspirin tablet thrown into the air?

RPD, he is one and the same. There's not much Ferguson hasn't hit after its been thrown into the air. He has some really good tips in his videos for those shooting traditional bows.
