  • new tool...im a dork

ive balked at all the nebwy threads on various other forums about air guns. you know the i live in cookie cutter sub division and ill kill tree rsats to live threads.
anyway. for the last few months ive been milling it over and bought one last week.
nothing fancy just a basic crossman vantage break barrel. its a good 1-200fps gun. got it mainly to stay up on some basic shooting skills..and to thin out varmits around here with out busting out the big guns.
came with a scope..ill get it zero'd then remove ..im more of a iron sight guy any way.
it'll also be good as my lil girl has her daisy bb gun and it'll give us both something to do while she learns better handling etc.
total cost rifle package..tin of pellets was under 130$
ill build a trap outta some ply wood and sheet metal as a back stop..

next thing you know ill be building one of those sling shot arrow thingys all the newbs are drolling over lmao.

Good training tool for the kiddos and you can definitely whack some squirrels with them.

I remember watching the boy one day when he was young- I put a silhouette next to the fence, brought him back a little bit and said he could work with his BB gun. He had already had a fair amount of safety training and I kinda just wanted to observe how safe he would be without me standing over him.

Safe he was and funny. He shoots one shot, reloads and then kinda glances side to side. He started out standing in the open. Pretty soon he walks over near a fruit tree, drops to a knee and begins shooting again.

I bust out laugh and say "good job there Tacticool Tim!" We talk for a bit about how that was a good choice and I let him go back to playing aka "training."

We've geeked out a little bit lately also. These have been great for around the house, we got 10 minutes let's do some drills type of stuff.

The manipulations are exactly the same, minus the three position selector.

yeah ive been milling over getting a similar deal for here as well..and getting the o rings fixed on the 17 clone. i figured if shes got her lil daisy ..the other gives me some refreshers and will keep the tree rats,,coons and pssums at bay. i almost forked out the extra 40+ for a 22 cal one but wanted to test the waters 1st . .117 is plenty good for tree rats/coons at 1200 fps imho lol . thing sounds like a 22lr though ....

          ok.

          heres the skinny.
either im retarded(thats not proven yet,,,,but) or thers some issues/.

i shoulda waited before trying the scope..i maxed out the windage..wouldnt go the extra 1-2inchs i needed. but groups were super tight. i could tell fatigue was setting in as the groups got bigger and bigger.
off goes the scope. had to adjust the sights pretty good. after that at around 30ft+ i was hitting bottle cap sized stickers. it needs a break in period of 100+ rounds. i prolly did just under that.
so we'll see. im confident of it being minute of tree rat and larger critters with irons. but may put a better scope on it. dont want the tree rats to run off.
i coulda done better on my set up as well..just went prone and started shooting. no rest,,etc. but honestly with the groups i was getting i dont think it mattered. just couldnt get that scope to adjust further.

            update,

im sure im well beyond the "break" in period.

so got the irons sighted in, even they needed adjustment.
i put on a "good" scope a 3x9x40 tasco. nothing fancy but a old hunting scope i had laying around. maybe cost 60-80$ 10 yrs ago. anyway. i had to swap mounts. got it on the rifle and went to sight it in.
sfter bit i was getting decent groups ..at 30-40 ft. (1 inch sticker targets). but consistency was off. id get two rounds touching. then a flyer.
the trigger on this thing is a two stage adjustable. so i shorten the length of pull on the take up, but trigger weight is crazy, easily 10lbs if not more.

i watched the groups get bigger . so started to concentrate on form, more so. problem is i dont move like i used to so my center line was off.breathing was fine. but fatigue had set in, even my trigger finger was stiff from the pull. i had been shooting for near an hour. so instead of getting frustrated or adjusting the scope more. i just did some quick snap shots kneeling.. etc. after 4-6 hits on target i figured it was just me... i may look up how to do a trigger job on this thing to lighter the trigger pull. doing dry runs i could see through the scope it pulling to the right at times when i squeezed.

end result- more practice ...breathings good,, but trigger control on this thing is gonna be key. my mosins and mausers have better triggers and thier 60 yr old mil rifles lmao!

Glad to see I'm not the only Dork on here! ;)

I've been wanting to get one of those Gamo Whispers for here in town.

I have a Benjamin Sheridan .20 cal but its a pump up pellet rifle. I have killed a couple possums with it and a coon plus many tree rats but pumping that thing up is a workout in its own.

The .20 cal is cool though, kind of a compromise between .177 and .22.

i almost got a benjamin with 22 and 117 barrels w/4x32 scope for 140 ish. but didnt trust the swap out barrels.
whisper was 170ish iirc. so i passed. this one isnt as loud as it was,,but ive got about 200 rounds through it now.
i just gotta work on the trigger control.

filled up the bird feeder few hours ago.......so we'll see what happens (ive got the day off on monday....)

i honestly thought about a cheap red dot style since distances wont go past 20-35 yards.

IM a Uber DORK! I love my RWS air guns. Its great fun to smack critters even out to 70+ yards with them. Im even considering getting a large caliber 9mm or 45cal.

I have a dual barrel and the issue is that you may have to re-zero. YMMV.

@Benn Gleck - the benjamin .20 was what i used primarily as a kid...it is a workout. The springers make shooting more enjoyable. You might consider the Nitro, I am still doing my research on them for my next one.
