  • so here's a wild prediction... on ammo costs... i hope this limb is strong.

does anyone here have a connection to ammo mfg and/or distribution process? i'd sure like to get an "insider's" viewpoint..
i'm going out on a limb here..

ammo has had a huge jump in price and drop in supply... prices are down somewhat from the high... and supply is reappearing slowly.

then i hear that the last u.s. lead smelting company is closing...

and our elected leadership are making it harder for all mfg to do business. (obamacare, added regulations, added restrictions, added costs)
the democrats are constantly securing their voting base (they usually vote against the gun/ammo positions)
the republican minded folks are constantly dividing their voting block with each small block being idealistically pure. this group of folks is more inclined to vote for the guns/ammo positions. so it will get progressively more difficult to get conservative issues passed.

so, back to the issue of ammo supply and pricing--- here's my prediction.
raw materials will cost more and supply lines are going to be smaller and disrupted.
    legislation will hinder production.
general costs/inflation in society will affect ammo costs just like they will everything else.
ammo pricing has currently dropped a good bit from the high... all things go up in price and they go down.

this is a great time to stock up... buy what you need. buy more than you need. invest in ammo...
    evaluate the situation for yourself...
    give us your opinion...
then somebody pull this back up every 5 or 6 months and let's see where we are...
anybody have a way to post some "standardized prices" so we can have something to compare in months years to come.
i'll be real happy if you guys are all laughing at me as time goes by...
i believe if you are laughing at me for this prediction... that means things are going well in the ole usa!!

I will throw an Excel spreadsheet together with calibers, components, prices, and suppliers.
"One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.

      that would be great...
if it could be made so that making entries periodically even more awesome...
maybe that is a feature of an excel spreadsheet??

so that we could all compare and watch the trend.

      i'm impressed!

Not a problem.... Let's keep the Suppliers, brands, and calibers manageable by limiting them to 5 or so specific suppliers like (just suggesting here) SG Ammo, Midway, Cheaper than Dirt, etc.... (any other ideas, suggestions) and a specific list of calibers like .22, 9mm, 40cal, 45ACP, 5.56, 7.62x39, and 308Win. Not sure how foreign brands like TulAmmo and Wolf will be affected but it would be interesting to see if those prices spike as well.

I saw .22 in academy the other day for the first time since dec of 2012.

Was ticked at the 2 box limit, so 2 boxes of 325 rounds over the 2 bricks of 100..... arithmetic!!!!!

That box of 325 used to be 16.99, now its 17.99, not a big deal to me at all .

I did see the hunting ammo I bought last year has went up $8 a box.
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

            tackle,
I sure appreciate you volunteering to do this...
your cal choices are great. maybe adding 12 ga buckshot?
i'm not sure how burdensome this will be... but limiting suppliers suits me... maybe that is a way to
make this a little more time saving... maybe using whatever suppliers supplies their pricing the easiest?
folks could use this as a shopping tool... but my idea was to use it to monitor the price trends..
i'm guessing the more suppliers you use, the more cumbersome the job becomes.
            up to you!! your spreadsheet!!
            thanks again...
you get my vote for survivalistandprepper of the month!

              RR,

It will be my pleasure. 12ga is a great add. I am currently looking at various suppliers but what I would like are suggestions from users for their preferred suppliers. Once I get the list I will pare the list down to the easiest sites to cull the data from and then update the spreadsheet on a monthly basis or as socio-political events dictate. Also, I will need guys to give me their favorite brands of ammo. For instance, I have not yet succumbed to the "Darkside" LOL, and bought an AR yet so I do not have a need shoot 5.56 (size & hygiene matters some...LOL) so do AR shooters like Lake City, PMC ammo, etc? Basically, I don't want to waste time on brands we do not shoot but if I find a great deal out there I will post it. After all, if it goes bang we shoot like it, right?

Any thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

** If anyone feels uncomfortable sharing their favorite brand info in the open forum just shoot me an email. I promise all emails will be destroyed before the NSA can record them.

Powder Valley is a pretty big retailer of reloading components. Their website does a pretty good job of listing out their prices.

For loaded ammo, I would just pick a major retailer and go with their prices. The Wal-mart out by me has been consistently getting 5.56 in stock in various round counts and quality points. From my limited travels, their prices are pretty consistent store to store.
