  • A quick check of skills

A quick and easy check of where you stand with your weapons skills:

With a dry gun- i.e, NO AMMO. You can use a "snap cap" or dummy rounds if you so desire.

Do all of these WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE GUN. Keep your eyes forward, focus on a light switch, something out in the yard, etc. If it's something MOVING, all the better. Now this doesn't mean your weapon can't be in your peripheral vision, but do NOT look down at it or otherwise focus on the weapon.

    Now...

Bring your weapon up (Rifle or pistol), dry fire at the item your focusing on, using another EMPTY magazine swap magazines and charge the gun. If so inclined manipulate your safety several times. Go through a malfunction drill retaining the magazine and another not retaining the magazine. REMEMBER YOUR NOT LOOKING AT THE GUN AT ALL-

Switch hands (pistol) or do a shoulder transfer if rifle, and complete the same on the opposite side shoulder. SEE ABOVE.

If using rifle, transition to pistol, AGAIN NO LOOKING. If using pistol put weapon back in holster and draw with opposite side hand ONLY. Go through the same manipulations- loading, etc. with just one hand.

Strive to be smooth, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

We all TALK about dry work when it's time to avoid spending money on ammunition for training. Are you doing enough of the dry work? The above drills will tell you.

If you breezed through this, enlist the help of a friend to stand behind you and punch, kick and push you as you do the work, alternately they could hit you (semi hard) with a stick.

    Have fun!

Be careful which friend you let hit you with the stick...just saying.

Good reminder, I know I don't do enough dry drills.

all of these were easy enough except for one thing. I have my pistol in my "tactical set up" to where my left hand can't really draw it well. I hadn't realized it before this. My EDC pistol is no issue...Thanks for the heads up.

          Want +1000?

Do this with a 2.5 year old doing what he does and a curious 6 year old in tow with a wife commanding chore orders.

You will then be ready for the PAW
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

Good stuff, I've been trying to get in some drywork and drilling a couple times a week. Nice to just go in the backyard and work on fundamentals: stance, grip, using workspace and changing out mags all without taking eyes off the target. Like you said, slow and smooth my fren.
