Ok you guys got me and my son motivated with your fancy AK paint jobs! I have a Remington model 710 that I was considering doing. We used the high heat base coat and my son then stenciled patterns using pine needles, elm and oak leaves. Since we had it apart I freefloated the barrel before he got started. I took it to the range today and was pleasently suprised with my group using factory ammo, winchester 165 grain, at 100yds off a benchrest. I normally do not shoot off one but I wanted to see what the difference was. It was 3/4 inch tighter.

nice job on the finish. I dunno why people seem like they wanna bag on .30-06. its 104 years old, killed a metric mega ton of tojos, Huns,Nazis, and communists and every kind of 4 legged beast in north america. ok so its not a belted magnum. so what? it will throw a 150 grian bullet at 2900 fps and a 180 at 2750. have deer and hogs magically gotten tougher in the last 80 years that we need that super whiz bang bullet with the super short belted magnum case?"You are the Vice Regent of the Jews" -QRPRAT77

yeah they are on the stuff mark maquire is on ;p
i had a hog eat a 180gr jsp 300wsm at 175 yards ........1.5 hours later and 2 9mm fmjs to the mellon put him on the dinner table.....(granted it wasnt a good shot,,,but with a round made for larger game to not penetrate like it should have was annoying at best) It will punch clean through a deer though like butter.
needless to say i dont care for that rifle not only for some technical issues( bullet wise) but also for cost to feed it.
imho a 308/ 30-06 is about as good as you can get for an all around do all caliber.Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

have you considered hand loading for that thing? a lee single stage kit isn't alot of money about $100.
a barnes solid copper bullet would probably work great. i just read some handloading data comments on handloads.com. guy stuck a barnes tsx through a 1600 lb eland in africa with a .300 wsm.As with all high speed large game rounds, bullet construction plays a major role in terminal ballistic performance. If the gun is accurate enough for its intended purpose, what will make or break it is what the bullet does when it strikes its intended target. High velocity—extremely high in this case—cartridges have a set of problems all their own. If a bullet intended to perform perfectly in a lower velocity cartridge of the same caliber (such as .308 Winchester, or .30-06 Springfield) is used in the .300 WSM, the result is fragmentation and a shallow cavity; i.e. essentially a massive surface crater with poor penetration. With the right bullets, the .300 wsm is a devastating round on medium to heavy North American game animals. [2] [3] The actual bullet diameter used in this cartridge is .308 inches. Care should be taken to avoid using improper ammunition.
i just went on midways website and .300 wsm ammo runs as low as $30 a box!! thats the LOW. the high was $79.99. for 20 rounds! thats $1.5 -$4 a shot!!!!!!!! last time i looked federal 150 grn .308 was $14 at walmart.
a box of 50 barns TSXs runs $37 or about $.75 a pil powder 20-30 cents and a 3.5 cent primer puts you just over a buck a shot around $20-23 a box vs $60-80 for the exact equivalent in factory loads."You are the Vice Regent of the Jews" -QRPRAT77

Made an addition to my 710. I decided that since I do hunt with it alot and/or have it with me at different times it needed to be slightly more capable ya know just in case.
I added a small plastic rail
for a whopping $6.93 and free shipping and minimal weight addition. Takes a matter of minutes to place, drill and set. It's "illegal" to have a weapons mounted light for alot of states with current game laws however nothing prevents you from packing one in with you in case things go south while your out. Ya know zombies n stuff LOL or things that go bump in the night. Just watch where you drill and make sure you dont get into the barrel or stiffening hardware and after your done double check the zero.
Anyway its a cheap, easy project that is very doable for varied skill levels and doesnt require a complete stock replacement as many a salesman will have you believe.

Yet another reason I love this forum; I learn something with just about every thread I open. Spock, thanks for that tidbit on the bullets, I have a Savage 111 in .300 Win Mag that I'm about to go buy the supplies to reload a few boxes for. I'll be doing some more research before I buy bullets to make sure I get the right rounds.
Thank you Sir- Live long and prosper (sorry, I couldn't resist).
Nice paint job Matt- but I'd be afraid I would lean it against a tree and not be able to find it, lol.Brokedownbiker
