Spent a little time at the shooting range today. I had two basic objectives; Test two new acquisitions and a new load for the 45.
The two acquisitions are a used S&W CS9 sub-compact 9mm and a Henry U.S. Survival rifle. The S&W was bought from a neighbour that lost patience with the lack of 9mm ammo. Picked it up for $150. It worked flawlessly and is reasonably accurate. The two things I was most impressed with that made me buy it in the first place is that all my fingers (including my pinky) fit on the grip and that it's all metal.
The Henry is a point solution for when we ride our Harleys. We spend a LOT of time on the north Georgia back country roads and I wanted something that would fit in my saddle bags. It also functioned up to my expectations. The owners manual says to use high velocity rounds but with 22's I always start with the cheap rounds and work my way up to find the least expensive rounds that will work. I took a brick of old Federal rounds with me and it fed them flawlessly. I usually use CCI Stingers so I fed a few of those through with no problems.
The 45ACP rounds I reloaded still need a little tweaking. Out of 50 rounds I had 2 what I guess you'd call failure to feeds. There were two rounds that were a little too long and didn't seat correctly. I need to shorten the rounds a few thousandths so there's no possibility of that happening again. Easy adjustment.
As for the ammo, I stopped by a hole-in-the-wall gun shop on the way home and they had some .223 bullets that they'd gotten in on Wednesday. I asked how many they had and they said they'd gotten in 6,000 on Wednesday and had around 2,000 left. I bought 1,000 They're Hornady 55gr SPSX. They don't do mail order/phone/web business so I didn't post this in that thread. I also picked up 200 Hornady 9mm 115gr FMJ-RN, 200 Hornady 9mm 147 gr HP-BT-XTP, 200 Winchester shells, 500 small pistol primers, a pound of Accurate No. 7 and a pound of Accurate 2460. Sorry, I bought them out of the 9mm stuff and both the powders. Gotta get it while you can :-). Now all I need is my 9mm die set to come in and I'll have a good start.
All in all a good but expensive day :-)
