  • Mossberg 500 Question?

I was wondering if anyone knows about the Mossberg 500 and it's barrel length situation.
If I bought one with the 18 1/2" barrel that holds 5+1, I could then buy the 28" barrel and swap them out for hunting. Can you do the same with the 20" barrel? From what I can find, I get the impression that people are going with the 18 1/2" barrel so that they can use the 28" barrel as well. Is that because of compatibility issues? Or is it because it is illegal to have a 28" barrel with the larger capacity (7+1)?

I have a Mossberg 500a 12ga sold as a 'camper special' package. It came with 2 barrels;181/2 inch and a 28 inch with a capacity of 5+1. You can have the 7+1 capacity in most states if you put a plug in it that limits your capacity while hunting. Then, while not hunting, you can remove the plug and regain your 7+1 capacity. Check your state hunting laws to verify this...that's the definitive answer.

You can get a variety of barrel lengths for the moss and they will all fit fine. 28 is just the standard barrel. You cant change the capacity of the moss because of the way the barrel screws in, it doesnt allow for a longer tube. The 18 is the min legal

Basically I'm wanting to know that if I went with the 20" barrel, could I still swap it out for a longer (28") "hunting barrel?"
Would it be legal to have a 28" barrel with a capacity 7+1 or whatever it is?

yes you can screw any length mossberg 500 barrel on there over 18 inches and be legal. The capacity is 5+1. The capacity must be reduced with a plug for migratory bird hunting to 3 under federal laws and check your local laws for other capacity issues

actually mossberg sells a magazine tube kit to replace the shot tube with a 7 shot tube. but its $150. and then you can only use the 20 inch barrel for that tube.

Their 930 auto loader comes standard with an 8 shot tube. The Maverick holds 5. mount a "side saddle" on the stock for an extra five rds. I keep a bandolier loaded and handy--also have a small sack w/sling full of shells.

I see, I was unaware of that and oh wow that’s expensive! Can’t see that happening when I could take the gun and money and trade for something else designed for that.

I am buying the 28in barrel very soon to go turkey hunting in March.

I will definitely give the review.

It works well for dove hunting! IC choke, 2 3/4 upland...tracks quite well :)
