  • Gamer vs Combat Shooting

Many people go to competitive shoots as their training which is fine and it does help but know there are differences. I will point out some things sure to upset some folks but oh well slide on the big girl britchies and see the truth. I would rather walk away placing 15th using real gear and real tactics with pride in knowing I did it right. 95% are not professionals just braggers anyway. I've also done posts on the pros of shooting games for combat so i'm not being one sided either.

10rd limits so no one has an advantage, stupidest thing I ever heard. Of course a 20rd mag has an advantage especially when you leave the house with just it and a spare mag. You are training yourself for failure thinking you are equal with 8 rds or less just because its a ___. Things dont always go perfect out there and that aint your secondary its your primary.

Not using cover, folks will go out of their way to not use cover to gain a direct angle shot at a closer range. Bad idea in the real world.

One match I put together had them leave an empty pistol and a magazine in their range bag then load and engage. The 2nd group was placing the magazine in the well of the handgun so all they had to do was slap it and go rather than leave them separate. Who really won that day, the folks who shaved a second or the ones who did it for real like it sits in the house or the car trunk and will use it on Z day?

Round counting and setting up everything then falling apart with a miss, gaming not training, just shoot it and see what happens. Its ok to make sure you have enough ammo/mags to shoot the stage but dont go ay further than that.

One shooter recently whipped out his pistol and blazed thru the course with the fastest time, missing every target but a no shoot target. Excuse, the targets weren't properly spaced. He actually went backwards in score and certainly isn't the guy I hope to see in 7-11 on a bad day.

One shooter crashed thru a door instead of waiting on it to open fired a round into the ground while stumbling and then engaged the targets proclaiming he "won", really? When confronted he stated to me "winning that's what its all about my time was best". Turned out he was wrong about that too:)

Most times you start in the box from hands at the side naturally relax or from the surrender position. There is always one though. This one has one foot in the box one outside the box and has stretched himself beyond the starting cover to gain the advantage in running to the first target. He was corrected because this wasn't the course of fire and it's not how you would start in real life either.

An extra just for fun match was held for ccw. The number of guys with zortchiton ray guns in magnetic holsters under a shirt 5 sizes to big for them was astounding. No prizes, no fame but still gaming.

Movers, excuses for missing was that we didn't have the movers set to the proper timing. Wow really cause everything you hunt or bad guys all move at exactly .... speed.

Using downloaded ammo. Again not a good idea in the real world when that slide rises and the need for a second shot is there on that charging hog and you just capped a full house 10mm instead of a light 40 "special" load or just shot a deer with a marginal hit with a 30/30 instead of that ultra light 38 cowboy lever load and need a follow up.

Weak hand is just that, be honest, if your a lefty don't kick the snot outta everyone thinking you won by cheating and not telling the RSO. Have character as someone who is supposed to be training instead of gaming.

To the man/woman they will all tell you "if anything bad ever happens my place will be safe". Really? One stage involved shooting, holstering and moving then repeating the sequence 3 times. The crying and whining was unbelievable because none of them had holsters that would retain the gun while doing so. Thats the one you want on perimeter patrol with ya? You jump the creek and they lose their gun LOL. gamers don't have real equipment.

These are just some examples and I'm sure there are more. Go out there and have strength enough to shoot your shoot, be your own person and if asked, cat called or razed tell them why you do what you do. There is nothing wrong with gaming but there is nothing wrong with tactics either. Some situations and stages will force you to do things you don't want to or normally wouldn't so be willing to roll with the flow a little and discuss what you would do differently with those LMIs around you.

Great post! Honesty is a strong positive character trait my friend! I don't know how you stand it around folks like that. Not just 'gamers', there's always several in every arena of life. Keep up the training and good luck!

      Right on, Matt.
One thing I have found, that when exposed to live fire, a person will act like they have been trained. The adreneline level is higher than can be imagined and rational thought does not exist (at least for me). Those who have been well trained have at least a chance, however slim it may be. The gunstore commandos are in a world of hurt.
