  • .50 Beowulf

Being a fan of the AR platform, I was in search of something on the AR that would be good for hunting in my area. Very hilly terrain with thick brush and tall pines, evergreens, and various hardwoods. A "long" shot would be anything over 150 yards. I wanted something that had punch to get through brush AND would ensure quick knockdown of whitetail deer. Having to track one in thick briars is very difficult so you want a quick end. For years I have been using my model 95 chambered in .45-70 but I wanted something more modern. Something that didnt look silly with a modern scope on it (sorry to those of you that have a modern scope on your lever guns, I just mean that I wanted something with the 45-70 punch but the AR platform).
After looking at the options out there I went with the .50 Beowulf. Well, I have killed three deer with it now and I can tell ya it is incredibly well suited for hunting in the backwoods of NY. It is easy to carry, comfortable, a little loud and it has noticable recoil but not uncomfortable or unmanagable. I like the fact that I can easily reload them with easy to get components as well. Using the 300gr gold dot for whitetail is really great. No hyperexpansion so little meat loss but plenty of hydrostatic to knock them down.
Mounted on top is a Leupold 3-9x40mm scope so target aquisition is quick and easy. I have a jewel trigger in it because I really like that set up but I might put the RRA trigger back in it because I like the added safety of the 2 stage trigger when I have my gloves on. I am happy with both brands for each one's strengths.
Overall, I think this is definately a lifer...a keeper. I wont ever get rid of this set up, it works way too well.

That sounds like a great setup.I have been considering a 6.5 grendel upper for a little more distance. After alot of research this sounds like a great little round also.HAPPY HUNTING.

I think Bill Alexander had/has some awesome ideas for caliber choices. The 6.5 and .50 are two cartridges that work great for the intended purpose, but just haven't caught on that much.

Looked at a .50 or a .458 SOCOM, just never could justify the reasoning or the cost for something that would amount to a play toy in my safe. Still meandering around the 6.5 idea.
