  • Truck gun idea

I have a Marlin Camp Carbine .45 that I am considering making into a truck gun.

I have seen that Choate makes both an adjustible stock, like on an M4, and a side-folder. Anyone have experience with their stocks? Are there other companies that make similar stocks?

I like the idea of only having to carry 1 caliber of ammo, and if I'm carrying a 1911, as I often do, I also have interchangeable magazines, including some hi-cap mags.

    Thoughts? Ideas?

I had a Camp 45 myself and ended up selling it. Nice shooting little gun, just wasn't really something I used a whole lot and ended up taking up space in my safe. Don't have any experience with the Choate aftermarket stocks for the Marlin, but have seen them on the M1 Carbine. A little better made than the Tapco folding stocks and they seemed sturdy enough for the five minutes I played around with it in the gun store.

Overall having a handgun and long gun in the same caliber with compatible magazines is not a bad idea. But one thing to remember, it's still a pistol round and you will still be limited on range, round count and aftermarket accessories. As long as you know the limitations of the weapon/round, you should be okay. I personally would prefer something a little more potent and with a bit more range like a side folding AK or AR carbine, but it's up to personal choice.

That Camp 45 was a fun thing to shoot though.
Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.

Thanks Grand, for your thoughts on this.

I understand about the limitations of a pistol caliber carbine. I am also considering the Mini14 for a truck gun.

      No hard decisions yet made.

        Ditto what Grand said.

To me the limitation of a pistol caliber in a full size rifle is not worth any perceived benefit from the mags also working in a pistol.

That would work good for a general use truck gun.

I have had plenty of "truck guns" over the years. Rifles, shotguns, pistols. No matter what I had dedicated to the truck, I always encountered a scenerio where the other would have been better than what I had.

Eventually I settled on a shotgun with 2 different choke tubes and a variety of rounds to shoot. This way I can take care of anything in this area from a few feet to 150 or 170 yards. The only thing that came close to be being an ideal truck gun for me is the ole 30/30, I rode with that for about 4 years. The thing that changed me to the shotgun was the great goose swarm two years ago. Here I was with a swarm of Canadian geese overhead, in season, and all I had was a 30/30 lever gun.

I've shot some Camp 9's that were very nice - one had side folding stock that didn't quite seem 'right' like it wasn't all the way 'open' when it was open. Hope that made sense.
