    Things beyond armor.
I have a profession in which we get to fight. Sometimes it's planned and sometimes it's not. When it's planned then we gear up for it. Just like if you knew you were going to be in a gun battle the pistol would be holstered and the rifle would come out. It's just smart, to borrow a quote, if your fighting fair then your tactics suck. If you know or even strongly suspect that a fight is coming then gear up.

Gloves. Padded to protect from strikes, weather planned or accidental hard knocks inccured during the struggle, protect from biting. Maybe a set for fire protection or barbed wire. Make sure you practice shooting WITH these on as well. Many gloves offer protection at the cost of movement and feeling.

Protect from bloodborne pathogens. People are just plain nasty now post PAW eeww and this is speaking from experience of 3rd world holes the green machine allowed me to visit. Also get the watch and coolio bracelets off cause they dont help in a fight where wrist grabs are common and you need to be able to slip them. Plus watches might be hard to come by in PAW so dont break it wrestling zombies.

The shins, if you know you are going to a fight then have what is needed for kicks, slips n falls and maybe even stopping secondary projectiles such as richochets that dont have much oomph but alot of jagged edges.

ok so it's PAW and you need something to protect but didnt buy any. Try wrapping magazines around the arms and legs and tape them off. Use books use anything and everything as long as it doesnt interfere with your motions and fall off.

As stated in the thread that started this a bruise can shut you down for a bit and maybe during harvest season or wood cutting season that can make the difference in making it or not.

If you have the time like Matt says, don't forget the helmet. Also it's not just Blood borne pathogens to worry about but post PAW any cut or scratch can become infected and then become a serious threat.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Knee pads and shin guards! Great thread, Matt, this is something I've not considered but I'll be looking into. Have you ever seen shirts and pants that have pockets for guards to go into that work worth a darn? I'm thinking heavy material like canvas (I'm thinking Carrhart or similar) or modern synthetic gear.

I own several sets from LAPolicegear. They do in a pinch but are no real subsitute. The one advantage is the knee pads down slide down on ya

That's always been my problem with knee and shin guards- they end up at my ankles if I have to run or jump with them on. Frustrating as all get out. I guess I'll modify some of my Carhartt double layer jeans or my Wrangler Riggs- great pants BTW, rip stop fabric, double fronts on the legs, cargo pockets, etc.

Mechanix impact gloves are padded inside and out. Good for heavy work . Would protect your hands in a fight but to bulky for tedious work.

I love my mechanics gloves. They fit awesome and really take some abuse. I wear some chainsaw chaps and my gloves and I am set o process some firewood.
