Let me be the second to say the baton is a viable defensive tool that can be learned relatively quickly and has a good psychological and physiological performance. Both extended and closed strikes tend to get someone's attention very quickly and can be used as a defensive tool for blocking strikes and parrying as well. I've played the "red man" from time to time and even getting hit in the padded suit tends to sting a bit.

I think they are a good add to any arsenal. They can be used many diiferent ways and diiferent skill levels. Matt do you like using one or two?? For me I found using two felt better, more natural in a fight. I'm by no means great with them but can do some damage in a fight. One some times feels like a beat down tool, which works great when needed. I use two- 1 18in. an 1 12in. baton. The different sizes help me with motions. And like Grand said they hurt why you get hit even with pads. And dont get hit in the hands with it, you will remember it for a long time cause it hurts like hell.

I'm just getting into arnis stick fighting and dont have 2 yet. As far as traditional use I'd rather stay with one because i am busy with the other hand as well
Yep love the redman suit but you still feel alot of it

I had a spring loaded one that I bought with a pair of S.A.P. gloves. Sold both to a fellow Justice studies student who currently used them for his guard job. I got more then I payed for them. One thing that I noticed about mine when a practiced with it was to get any real power in mine required telegraphing your movements. I had a fellow J.S. student who completed a training academy already and was attending school to meet the minimum age to apply to his local agency show me how to wield it a little. His minimum age was 23 for some reason. For simple altercations it may be useful but for opponents with training not so much. Good fear weapon or last resort weapon but if you want a less then lethal alternative that is a baton and requires less telegraphing get a spring based one over a collapsible. At least that was I was told.
Even with telegraphing your movements the physical impact of a collapsable baton will tend to be more than a lot of normal people can handle especially if you are aiming for limbs. I've been struck with one through a red man suit and even through thick padding it stings pretty good. The better grade ones like the ASP tend to do more damage than one might imagine, even for those with training. One thing about it though, you cannot go into a fight worrying about whether or not some has had baton training. You go in, let training and technique take over and strike and counterstrike. If your opponent is trained to the same level you are, other measures could be in order.
I'm fairly certain spring loaded clubs are illegal in some so you have to check your local laws to make sure you are legal.

Sometimes telegraphing isnt all bad. It kept me from having to hit a guy once and in spite of many assumptions not everyone wants to beat the other one down all the time. well some of the time, well... LOL
