  • AK-47 Magazines

I have an AMD-65 (Hungarian AK-47) arriving soon.

I'm trying to find out what magazines work well and which don't. Is there any difference between any of the East European steel AK mags or are they all about the same? What about the polymer Bulgarian mags?

I have an AK-74 which just hated the American-made ProMag magazine but had no troubles with Bulgarian ones. I wonder if the Tapco's would have similar problems.

    Thanks

I cant help you out to much on the AK mags of who is best I will leave that to the experts who actually carry them
But one thing i can tell you in promag anything has been nothing but constant headaches. I have worked on so many for friends and range associates it's not even funny. The majority were beyond help even being brand new. The quality is zero, spend your money more wisely and actually enjoy your shooting experience

I have a Romanian AKM, 7.62X39, and at present time have 8 magazines, all east european steel. I honestly don't know how to tell what country/countries they are from. I bought them at local shops at different times. They all work just fine.
Stick with steel military surplus mags and you should be OK.

USA, Pro Mag, and another from cheaper then diirt (Polermer) "may" have been TAPCO, were all junk for my MADDI. E. German and the russian surpluss have never had a issue except for one 20 rounder the follower would hang up mid way through... definately stay away from USA and Pro Mag brands. I have learned my lessons with them in various platforms over time... buy factory or equivelant.

"Circle 10" Bulgarian waffle mags are nice but costly. They are not going to rust though.

As a general rule, Any MILITARY metal 30 rd. magazine x39 magazine will work out fine. Century Arms hasn't tried to start making magazines yet.....

40's are cumbersome, almost impossible to stow and the only metal military mag I've had issues with.

You don't need to drop big dollars on Circle 10's or US Palm mags, buy them cheap and stack them deep with metal military mags.

Also, while it's better to see them in person if buying used IN GENERAL used military metal 30's are usually a good risk if the price is right. We used to do the "100 for $1.99 each" deals SOG did in the long long ago and never had a problem with any of them. Wish they were still that price.

I've had two different experiences with the Tapco mags. On my WASR, it would fit okay. On my Arsenal, it doesn't fit without getting trimmed up a little on the sides. Opposite thing with the Bulgarian "bullet" mags, which are not the Circle 10 mags. On the WASR it didn't fit at all, but on the Arsenal, they fit perfectly.

But I've never had problems with any surplus metal mags. I don't have any of the Hungarian mags, but the remainder of my stash from various countries have worked great. I wouldn't imagine why Hungary would be any different.

The Arsenals have an EXTREMELY TIGHT (for an AK) mag well. You will not have as much play as you will with a Chinese AK or (worse of all) a WASR. Wasr's in general usually have too much play in the mag well. Everyone likes to push the magazine supported prone and say that it causing jams is an old wives tale. But I've seen it cause jams on a sloppy WASR.

I hear the front grip on the AMD 65 interferes with 30 round mag changes, and they were made to take 20 round mags. Never owned one, so I'm not sure.
