  • The Mossberg strikes again

its basically a swamp right now where I live. Last night me and the rat dog are returning home coming down the path and in the water over the path is....a water moccasin! i snatch the rat dog up before she spots it and it takes off into the grass which is under 4 inches of water. I take this flying summer salt leap past the area the snake is in like some drunken Olympic athlete and put the dog away and grab the shot gun and a flash light. I confirm its a water moccasin my buddy confirms it too and I give the snake a 1/2 once load of number 8s to the head. it thrashed in the water for about 30 seconds and was dead.

    the mighty .410 strikes again!

Gotta love the old stand by .410, 10-4!
I am impressed by the "Drunken Olympian Roll"
Probably what I should've called the roll I did when I laid the little tractor on it's side!!
Felt like "OH SHIRT! It's chasing me down the hill, RAMBO ROLL TIME!!"
I'm sure it looked VERY UNATHLETIC!

Another 410 fan here! My Mossberg 410 is Old School - 183KE bolt action with C-Lect Choke.
My other two are very Old School - break open single shot, and a SXS double barrel.
I put a sling on the single shot so I could carry it and tools at the same time while out working on "The Ol' Homestead."

I don't care what they look like, how beneficial they supposedly are, snakes are SOS for us. Shot on sight. We identify them after they are dead. I remember one time we are playing zoology after I capped one. The wife and boy were discussing what it was, was it dangerous "that one probably wouldn't have bit us." I said "well it definitely won't bit us now."

My .410 is an OLD over/under .22 .410, I love having it around, great squirrel slayer. My son has a savage .410 pump from a while back.

I agree with Lowdown3 except for the very easily ID. Blacksnakes and the like, are very welcome. If it scares me while walking our reaching, could be a different outcome.

Locally, a 25 round box costs $12.95. Priced a 20 round box of good centerfire hunting rifle ammo lately? A box of Federal soft points for my 8MM Mauser is $28.
Actually, mine are "carried much, shot little". I like to keep a shotgun handy when outside the house, especially at dusk when I go out to put the chickens up for the night, and the 410's are just lighter and easier to carry. And a 12 ga is kinda overkill for an egg stealin' possum.

Lowdown 3, you sound like a friend of mine that told me one time how easy it was to identfy any snake and what to do with them, "they's all copper headed water rattlers and need'a killin". I've met a lot of folks that are in aggreement with this.

410 is about double what 12 and 20 ga is but i don't shoot it alot. no recoil and not ear shattering loud either.

About snakes - we've got a good size black snake that hangs out by the hay shed, and a red rat snake that hangs around the wife's tool shed. We leave them alone, they keep other small critters under control.
But poisonous snakes are another matter.
