    White lithium grease is recommended for bolts on M1 Garands, and bolts and rollers on M14's.
    RPD, whoever told you that about ATF is mistaken. The different types have different frictional properties, so he/she may have been confused on that issue. Newer AT fluids are synthetic also and can be expensive as all get-out. How's $26.00 a quart sound? :) (for continuously variable tranny) ATF was (in the 60's & 70's) recommended, among other oils, to add to gasoline to run multifuel (think M-35/M-54) engines. No abrasives.
