Last Saturday ammo buy. Grrrrrrr!

Last Sat I went to the local gun show in Rochester NY to walk around and to pick up ammo. When I got the ammo guys table at 9:30am he was almost cleaned out, well I bought the last case of the 5.56 off of him. We talk about the ammo for a bit and he told me that he is having a hard time getting any at all. He told me that the next batch if Russian rounds will be at his shop in about 6 months. Mind you thus guy buys it in the cargo storage vessels. Sat he started with 167 case at 9am and I bought the last at 9:30. That was steel rds he did have LC 5.56 $330 per case and by the end of the day that was all gone 230 case. I have looked on line and it still looks like you can get it on line but I just hate paying for shipping looks like I am going to have to.

This dealer talks about the reason some of the steel case .223 ammo is starting to dry up. But add in election year, 2012 craziness and the nonsense going on in the news and you add up to another panic buying. There is already one site I know of that's started raising prices on ammo and I'm sure others will follow eventually.

If you read the fine print of that "gazzilion" rd normal and boring contract making the tin foil rounds it says "up to" x# of rds not that they are going to buy that many. That contract also is for a specific company and not all of them especially steel cased foreign stuff. Just another way for "survival" and "ammo" companies to stir the pot into a feeding (buying) frenzy.

I have no trouble finding my calibers of .22, 12G, .308 and .40.

They are plentiful at my local Arkansas Imports. We also have a lil mom and pop Sporting goods store that has a good bit. They are about 10% higher on everything but they have the loyal fanbase. I did see that had 1000 rounds of 9mm for $80 the other day. My buddy was all over it

I love it when I go to get .308 and get the whole stack (usually only 3-5 boxes of FED 150Grain) and the old man in the sporting good section always tells me another guy always comes in the next day by chance and is pissed when he sees all the .308 gone...I should leave him a box sometime :)

I agree with you guys though, folks are making a run on ammo so get it while the gettin is good. Come Sept, Oct, its going to be precious just because. I have came off of the food for a minute with my allowance and am concentrating strictly on projectiles.

Yeah. I read the contracts allow "up to x amount". I do think this administration is helping to stir the pot.

I'm with you Wiseowl. It's hard to know what to concentrate on sometimes. Ammo or food? Buy it with cash or rack up the credit card? LOL

All I can tell you is the ammo guy has always been a straight shooter and has been for the last 20yrs. So when he tells me that he is getting worried about the amount of ammo he is able to get make me raise an eyebrow.

I read a report that the military is being prohibited from selling their used brass. I haven't been able to confirm that. One of the dealers at the recent gun show told me. Anyway, there were apparently some companies out there that would buy the used .223 and 9mm and reload it for resale. He said that the military is now required to crush it and sell it for weight. Another dealer there told me that military bases have been told not to sell their surplus, but that they do it anyway, as the income is a line item in their budget. I haven't been able to confirm either story, so take them for what they're worth.

It happened a couple of years ago (the mutilation of brass) very briefly, but was rescinded in short order. Brass is still available to be had from Govliquidation:

Before I retired I purchased over 10 thousand rounds for our duty carry off a similar contract the only change was in the contracting agency, for 5years USM, 5 years BOP, 5 years FBI, now it is HS the is just Government procurement. Contract order numbers have not changed, but this the last renewal from the original contract.

This is good news, because sooner or later, some department will over order, and I'll be able to get HST from the vendor they sell it to.

Just buy what you can. I see it in the stores and online still. Buy a few boxes every week or payday and you will always have some. A once a year purchase of a case, just does not make sense for me. A case a month? :)
