  • .22 Ammo report, & ramblings

So after todays range session I have a couple of observations.
I've been shooting Remington soft lead .22 ammo & I was having a lot of failure to feed problems. I thought it was the gun not being sparkling clean. Well I changed to American Eagle brand cooper coated bullets and today no problems. I purposely left the gun dirty and no FTF problems.
The only problem today was I had a new & different brand of gloves and for some reason I was not letting the trigger re-set (I'm blaming the gloves). So on follow-up shots I would pull the trigger and nothing.
Oh well I'll have a lot of Remington for trade or barter.
A lesson learned is to try various combinations of ammo with the weapon to see if all components work well together.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Although I have never tried them, Remington Golden Bullet bulk pack has gotten bad reviews from lots of folks.
In my rimfires I have found CCI Blazer and Winchester Wildcat gives good performance. The Winchester Super X in the 50 round silver box is accurate in my rimfires, better than CCI Minimag and cheaper too.
I'm a rimfire guy, got 5 or 6 handguns, and that many rifles also.
I don't know if you have ever been to the rimfire central forum, but if not, check it out. It's huge! They have general sections, specific brand sections, ammo sections and much more.

It's a nice place filled with friendly, knowledgeable guys.
    Enjoy!

Yesterday we trained over 100 women at an NRA event and the station I ran we shot semi auto handguns of which one was 22s. The weather was sunny in the upper 80s. Early on one of the 22s went down (magazine catch spring issue) so we had 2 remaining pistols that fired at least 2 magazines apiece for the 100+ shooters. We were given a mixture of ammo in bulk packs for the event and it became very apparent quickly that the Federals had some kind of coating that was causing malfunctions and made us stop and clean it during the shoot, causing delays, but the Winchesters ran solid, clean and issue free. Given the volume of fire it made me think real hard and i got to thinking about this thread.
Also I have had very little issues with the bulk pack Remingtons but watching the volume of fire without cleaning I may be switching to a plated bullet even of it is more expensive for bulk storage. I also noticed some other things in a different caliber and will post them elsewhere.

        Matt,
I thiink the 22 rifles haviig trouble with the Federal ammo too. When you mentioned the problem with the magazine catch spring, I didn't realize you had been using Federal ammo.

Remington will not work in my spikes dedicated .22 uppers at all, It also dose not like my S&W .22 pistol. It runs fine in my ruger 22/45 pistol, and my "Ranger" .22 rifle. I do find a LOTTT duds... Failure to fires, no matter how many times the rim is struck.
MY spikes stuff loves the Augila and its favorite was the Winchester dynomax which I can no longer find here in florida(past several years) guess they dont make it any longer.
Federal 550 bulk pack also works well in all my .22s with fewer duds then remington but I still get them time from time.

Test "all" your stored ammo in your firearms to see how they handle it, POA/POI , feeding, reliability etc. Do this for your cary ammo as well...

Has anyone tried Aguila .22 Long Rifle Super Max Hyper Velocity Hollow Point Ammo

I have read some decent reviews on this but haven't picked any up. If it works well, it might be worth having.

Robertj, if you meant Winchester Dynapoint, they are still available. I get the Dynapoint 22LR at Kmart in the big city, the Dynapoint 22 magnum is carried by our small town Ace Hardware. Both could likely be found on-line.
The 22LR is accurate in my guns. The magnum Dynapoint is a 45 grain slug at about 1500 fps, which is not exactly speedy, but out of my Single Six they are not as obnoxiously loud as the full power loads, but still give me the power of a 22LR fired from a rifle but in a much handier package for farm carry.

My go to small game gun is Grandpa's old Marlin lever action. It will handle the hyper velocity rounds, but I prefer to use the .22 short. It is a lot quieter, (at least out of the Marlin) and has sufficient power to take tree rats, and bunnies. I have been told it would be able to take a deer with a clean head shot, but I'm skeptical of that.

I've had similar results with the Remington .22 ammo jamming and running very dirty. The Federal bulk packs get 'r done for me. No jams, reasonably consistent accuracy and less fouling. I can't justify spending the ridiculous money CCI wants when Federal's doing everything I need already. Maybe if I was a competitive target shooter....

Keep it 40yds or under and double tap, no issues
