  • AR 10 Info?

I am considering having built a DPMS, probably the Panther LR-308L with some modifications. My question to any knowledgable person farmiliar with these ARs is what is the use of the Gas Block, I am not familiar with any of these Military type ARs. I was in the Navy back in 62-63 and only fired Brownings and M1s. All my rifles have been bolt actions except for a couple semi-autos I owned, I know zip about them. Any info will be appreciated.

The AR is a gas operated platform rather than a blowback operation or a gas piston deal and the block is part of it. Thats an interesting choice for not being familar with it. Make sure you get training from someone.

The gas block bleeds gas off before the bullet exits the barrel and uses the energy (pressure) to push the bolt back. When the bolt hits the buffer, the spring in the butt stock pushed the bolt forward and it strips another round from the magazine. Stock AR10s way over pressure to garrentee propper functioning with all ammo. The DPMS is about the best on the market, my friend has 2 of the LR 243 win and loves them.

Thanks to all for the answers, I will respond to this by answering EBBs reply. I can't figure out how the gas gets held back with the gas block to do what you stated (Dumber than dirt, me) I have attached DPMSs website. I see the gas block approx 2/3 the way towards front of barrel and in front of free float tube but cannot figure out the rest. http://www.dpmsinc.com/firearms/firearm.aspx?id=53

Make sure you handle one before you commit. They're a little heavy. Especially when loaded up. My 2 cents.

I have a Bushmaster ORC (optics ready carbine) in 308. They are kin to DPMS since they are owned by Freedom Arms. I chose the Bushmaster because it having a chrome lined chamber and bore. My rifle fully loaded with a 20 rnd mag and a Nikon scope weighs 9.7 lbs. DPMS warns aginst using steel cased russian ammo in their rifles.I want to shoot whatever fits cause sometimes because of money or situation you may not have a choice.

I have one of the DPMS LR-308. Will say this it does shoot like a dream BUT its weight is a bit much right around 15lbs empty. So just taking it out for a walk is not an option. I was looking for a long range shooter and happened to come across it and also picked it up for a song. $750 the guy was hard up for cash since he was going through a divorce. I then had to put a scope on it. Here is the link of the post I started.

BarbiO the gas block has a small stainless steel tube that attaches to the gas block and runs under tha hand guard all the way to the bolt. The bolt has a little piece that is screwed to it that acts as a female that the stainless steel tube fits in side. When the round is fired the gas runs from the gas port in the barrel through he gas blockinto the tube under the hand guard into the little reciever piece on the bolt and when enough pressure is pushing on the bolt it comes out of battery and starts its rear ward travel. When Eugene Stoner designed the AR guns he had a set of specifications from the army or the dod or some one who was funding this rifle. The spesifications had a miximum weight, to make the weight that the buyers demanded he had to come up with this configuration to save the weight of the OP rod. He knew that a gun with and OP rod would be more reliable but it would meet the specs and would not win the contract. M14s, Grands, AKs an most all battle rifles have OP rods even the AR 180 that Stoner also designed. The dumping of gas in the reciver of a gun is not the best way to do it but it will havew to do till a really go kit comes along to retro fit the OP rod or a short stroke gas system to the existing ARs. I have a friend that is Nicaraguan he was in the Nicaraguan army and fought rebels in the mountains. When he was a newbee he was issued and AK latter he got a little rank and had his choice of a new AK or an AR. He told me if he had to clean his AR 4 times a day he would still want the AR. He said the AK was too heavy and not near as accurate as his AR.
