  • HK 91 (and clones)

Just wondering if anyone else on here runs an HK 91 or one of the clones? I have run one for a number of years and wouldn't mind hearing from anyone else that also does. How is yours is holding up? Have you needed any reapiars? How do you have it set up? Care to share your thoughts on your experience?

I have a CETME mdl C sporter made by CAI that i have had since around 02/03'. It has about 5k rounds through it so far. I guess you could say im own a clone of the dad to the HK91.

I put roughly around 1000 through it before i started to do repairs. Not out of need but out of wanting to.
I replaced the CETME firing pin and spring with a G3 pin/spring. I replaced the stock sets with a OG slim foreend and OD butt stock. I kept the G3 recoil spring, buffer etc attached. I then took a un issued CETME mdl C wood stock set and retro fitted it with a G3 recoil/stock plate, recoil buffer, guide rod and spring. SO pretty much all of the recoil parts are HK.
I then took and replaced the Locking piece with a newer one. Took the bolt head out and replced the rollers with +2's or 4's. Its been awhile so i can recall which. Either way i wanted to maintain a solid bolt gap of around .010-.012. I then repaited it with alumahyde.Attached the bayo lug. swapped in some US parts into my mags and other areas to make sure i stayed 922r legal. Treated the inside with miltec-1 oil and lube. installed a HK 3 point sling.

it is not my "go to' rifle due to crappy ATF issues on the mag release( push button vs paddle) and surplus mags are hit and miss. My will accept both HK/G3 and cetme mags with no issue. G3 surplus mags give me issues at times ( weak springs etc).
As a fun gun and as a back up it works well. It is very accurate- more so than me. I have yet to have any of the dreaded issues many have had with their CAI rifle builds.

The whole system cetme mdl b and C and 90 series of rifles by HK and thier clones are a hard weapons system for most to learn. Mostly due to the number of parts and the differences in how the systems operate ( blow back ). I slef taught myself to trouble shoot, repair the system. It wasnt easy lotta time thumbing through PDF's of armorers books, pictures, military manuals and talking with others who have them as well as just taking the thing down about 500 times and putting it back together.

If i was to ever have a MARs import mdl c fall into my lap( or a real HK91/g3), and it was in spec(gap wise) i would have zero issue trusting it as my go to.ymmv

I used to have a 91 then sold it for finical reasons. It never gave me a bit of trouble, ate anything i feed it even reloads. I wish in hind site that i would have kept it.

I have heard very good things about the PRT 91's.

My 91 is my goto MBR. I don't even know how many rounds I have through it anymore. It has been upgraded with a paddle mag release, which I really like. I have updated the furniture to the newer A2 stock and wide forearm. I also changed out the trigger housing to the black SEF style. I couldn't resist adding the bayonet adapter. I have the bipod and A3 stock in the parts bin and sometimes put them on as well. My one regret is that I never bought one of the excellent ZF scopes. I had several chances over the years and never did. One big advantage for me is that I have a very good friend here locally that is an excellent HK armourer. He works on his departments weapons and does some work for friends on the side. I have everything I need to build a 91/G3 clone, with the thought of making that my "truck" gun and as a spare (two is one and one is none). I quess I just need to get off my butt and bend the receiver. I attended the HK operators course a couple of years ago. It really helped me to develope a skill set that I didn't really have. Until that time all of my rifle training had been with the AR15/M16 family. My knocking around with my 91 had actually caused me to develope some bad habits from ignorance. I learned a great deal and try to keep up with what I learned in the class.

My FA91 lost the steel to aluminum weld, but I had it rewelded and zero issues since then. I'd really like to use it with the 22LR conversion but the receiver is the wrong shape. PTR91 receiver is the right shape but the PTR's hammer is the wrong shape for teh conversion. By using the FA91 trigger group in the PTR91 I can use the conversion kit. But I will probably just sell the kit since I just practice with 308 reloads instead of with 22 anyway.

As issued the PTR91 is good to go. I recently scoped it. But need to remount the scope since it is hitting a foot high at 30 yards with the scope adjustment bottomed out.

My Cetme's are good to go. But they are not HK clones.

I'm not familiar with the FA91, who makes it? Which scope are you running and which mount? I like the 22 conversion, it's a little on the pricey side, fun to shoot, and good for certain drills. Always good to see another 91 fan.

I also forgot to post above that I did get half of my receiver welded. Took a bit of a brake while on vacation, however I think I should have finished welding it one day this week if all goes well. I also forgot to mention that this is a 94 build and not a 91. I thought I would start with something smaller for my first bend. If all goes well I will move on to a 91 a little later.

Thanks protus. That's a new builder for me. I have not heard of them. I knew about T.B. (he who shall not be named), Century, PTR, JLD (now PTR), and Vector, along with many fine custom builders. Do you have any information on when they were made, how well they run, and cost, any other information would be of interest to me as well. Always like learning new 91 stuff.

They run cheaper than other 91s because they have teh problem with the weld. last one I saw was priced at $800 but was not selling. I picked mine up with the broken weld for $350. Cost me $150 to have it repaired.
