.308? VEPR?

I have been looking for a good MBR/Hunting Rifle. I am thinking .308 but I am wanting it on the cheap (the cheaper the better as long as it works).

I have been looking around at FALs, HK91s and AR-10s and they all seem like they are too costly.

So then I started thinking about an alternate like a PSL... so while looking for those I found a Russian VEPR .308.

Anyone have or shoot a VEPR .308?

Any suggestions for a .308 under the 1K mark? Any alternates that work well as MBR and a Hunting Rifle that are under 1K?

You should be able to find a plain Jane used AR-10 for under 1k.

Used AR... Hmm... I will look harder, I have not noticed any around locally (any good places for online?).

I like the AR platform, I know it and it is inherently accurate.

I have no experience with the VEPR butr have read some good reviews on it. I have no reason to believe it would not be at least reliable. I do think there are better alternatives for the money.

I have come to really like the the AR10 platform. To the point I am trying to figure out which one I want first: an AR10 or replace my FAL that I lost in the pawn shop :(.
