  • 16" 308 out to 1290 yards

I worked with a guy yesterday that had a 16" LMT AR-10. He wanted to shoot past a 1000 and that was the first target we had past a 1000 yards. The target was a piece of 20" wide by 40" tall plate steel. He only hit it once out of less than 10 shots (sorry, don't know the exact round count before contact was made). I really did not expect the round to make contact, but we were watching trace and calling wind for him with a spotting scope. We only did it once and he stopped shooting once he made the connecting shot. We looked at the ballistics afterwards and the 178 A-Max was subsonic at about 1150ish. it still had 400 lbs of energy at that range.

Not saying this was the best tool for the job, but with the bullet being subsonic for almost 200 yards, you could possibly bracket a target without them being wise as to them being shot at until the bullet made impact. The semi platform did help as he could shoot fast to maintain the same wind condition, which was absolutely howling. We did not do it twice so it may have been a fluke, but I was somewhat shocked even if it was a fluke. I have shot a 16" bolt gun suppressed to 1000, but it took a lot of elevation to get there.

That is a LONG WAY for anything other than a .50 BMG! Hitting it within 10 shots with a howling wind is really a feat for most rifles.

The ballistics you quoted still puts it in the realm of a good 1000 yard rifle.

As you are probably aware, the length of the barrel does not have any bearing on inherent accuracy of the rifle. The velocity loss does finally come it to play at long range.

I have made consistant hits with a 20 inch Tika at 1100 yards. Your post regarding the 16 inch a 1290 is impressive and very credible.

It's my buddies .308. I honestly had never heard of a Tika but we entered a NG Sniper match. He brought the rifle and glass, I brought the ammo.

Nice rifle. Magazines are pricey as all get out. My Savage FP Tactical is more accurate, but I really came to appreciate the consistency of the Tika.
