I worked with a guy yesterday that had a 16" LMT AR-10. He wanted to shoot past a 1000 and that was the first target we had past a 1000 yards. The target was a piece of 20" wide by 40" tall plate steel. He only hit it once out of less than 10 shots (sorry, don't know the exact round count before contact was made). I really did not expect the round to make contact, but we were watching trace and calling wind for him with a spotting scope. We only did it once and he stopped shooting once he made the connecting shot. We looked at the ballistics afterwards and the 178 A-Max was subsonic at about 1150ish. it still had 400 lbs of energy at that range.
Not saying this was the best tool for the job, but with the bullet being subsonic for almost 200 yards, you could possibly bracket a target without them being wise as to them being shot at until the bullet made impact. The semi platform did help as he could shoot fast to maintain the same wind condition, which was absolutely howling. We did not do it twice so it may have been a fluke, but I was somewhat shocked even if it was a fluke. I have shot a 16" bolt gun suppressed to 1000, but it took a lot of elevation to get there.
