  • 7.62x39 ar?

What would be involved in building an ar in 7.62x39? Pros and cons?

Not to sound mean, but why would you want to? I mean, there is a rifle that already that shoots that round...

I'm not trying to make this an AR vs AK thread. I guess if you really like the AR platform and want a 7.62x39 round because it punches through stuff, why not get an AR in .308. I'm not a ballistic expert, but I don't think the AR platform will make the x39 round any more accurate as it is just the ballistics of that round.

I agree with Sheepdog. If you're gonna go 7.62x39 I would go with an Ak. It's gonna be more reliable. If you want an AR, go with an AR-10. It's gonna be more accurate than a Ak. Just my humble opinion.

ditto, and didn't somebody just post a utube vid on the new AK model being released?

My neighbor has a AR in 7.62x39. It shoots like a champ BUT he has a problem with mags work proper. It is more accurate than the AK and has less kick. If push came to shove it would be used to hold a door open, its more of a novelty if you ask us.

This thread has given me an idea. I am going to try to load up .308 rounds that mimic the ballistics of the 7.62 x 39 and see if they will cycle reliably in my Dad's AR10.

              I bet they will!

Why? Less recoil = quicker follow up shots in CQB situations, theoretically less component expenditure, possibly use of different components that you might otherwise not be able to use, and to quote Clint Smith "Because I can";).
