  • 13th anniversary gift

Our 13th wedding anniversary is coming up. Every year, we like to follow the traditional gift ideas (1st is paper, 8th is bronze, etc.) Sometimes we're literal, like last year, our twelfth, which is "silk", we bought an antique japanese silk painting. Other years we stretch it, like the 11th (steel), when we chose to "steal away" to the Carribean for a few days.

This year, the 13th, is "lace". We see no need for doilies in our decorating scheme. So I offered my bride two suggested options for "lace"

    1) A bracelet or other jewellery (like a pendant) in which the metal is crafted in a lacework pattern, or
    2) A home defense shotgun with which she can lace intruders with lead (well, steel shot actually).

She is not the frothing prepper exactly, but likes the idea of home defense firearms that she can operate. I have had a .40 beretta sem-auto pistol under the bed (in a touch-pad safe) they I qual'ed her on approximately 13 years ago (see subject line).

We've had ocassion to take that out at night once or twice to investigate peculiar noises, and each time I've been concerned about her muscle memory.

Then my Dad gave me some of his old guns, one of which was a .38 special S&W Chief, so that is now loaded along with the beretta in the ready safe.

However, I've always felt that a petite but unhesistant woman can more easily run off an intruder (or a group of intruders) with a shotgun than a snubnose. We also have two kids in the house, so a shotgun's ability to load less-wall-penetrating ammo is a plus.

Among the guns my dad gave me was an old remington 20-ga. six shot pump action with what I would call a field barrel. I thought this might do the trick until I took her out to a range to fam-fire it. The gun was too long for her, and the length of pull on the pump -- heck, the pump action itself -- was very dificult for her. She's about 5'1" 115lbs.

So this had me looking at autoloading, tactical length shotguns. I've found online the Mossberg SPX pistol grip 8-shot (it has a butt stock and a pistol grip, and a18.5" barrel). 12 gauge.

Don't let any of my attempts at jargon lead you to beleive that I am well versed in firearms. Just never been afraid of them and have used them occassionally in the Navy and for sport. I want something she'll be comfortable with but of course, one hopes that if the ocassion arises, i will be home to weild it.

I invite any comments or counter suggestions from the more learned in this area.

That gun would be great with some new youth model furnture so the length of pull fits her and either chop down the barrel (legally)or buy a shorter one. She's about the size of my daughter who shoots her 20 just fine and now even better since i put on a youth stock

Congratulations on 13. My wife and I are also having our 13th anniversary and this year I plan on building her own AR. She has been asking for one for awhile now and a pink camp she will get.

Might try the Remington 870 express youth model. Shorter stock with I think a 20" barrel with choke tubes.

All good thoughts. i will look into each.

One thing no one has commented upon is the autoloader feature. I know it is pricier, but is there any functional drawback?

I am not as short as your wife, and we won't discuss how long it has been I saw 115lbs, but I love my old J.C. Higgins youth model pump 12 gauge. The action on that old gun is so smooth you can litterally pump it with one hand. There is something very intimidating about the sound of an action on a pump shotgun. It is an almost universally recognized sound... even by people who aren't familiar with guns.

I have to agree with the aural delight of the pump action being the first thing an intruder hears in a dark silent house.

My wife is a great and surprising catch in her lethal determination. When I met her, she was a floor manager in a magnificent mile (chicago) department store who at 34 had never driven a car (complete city girl). She's also of Chinese descent. Despite her petiteness, she has a demeanor that no one will doubt she means business when she has a long gun levelled at you.

Interesting thing is that people who have known her or have worked with her for years alwatys erxpress surprise when they learn she is only 5'1". They always say "you always seemed a lot taller to me for some reason." Demeanor.

Finally have the gift in hand, a Mossberg 930 SPX auto with a pistol grip. I can't wait to heat up the barrel in a trial...er, I mean, let my wife try it out at a range.

DO NOT assume that the shotgun round - any shotgun round - will not penetrate a wall. Even #8 shot will tear through a sheetrock wall. Less penetrating? Either it does or it doesn't. Even if not fatal results, this is a tragedy in the making.
Be safe about this (everyone!) and do not fire any weapon towards an occupied (by friendlies) room. Plan in advance "shoot" and "don't shoot" lanes of fire...and practice it (of course don't actually shoot :) )until it becomes second nature.

I really don't know who on the internet started the bs about shotguns not penetrating walls, but they need to be on the other side of the wall one day...just saying...

BTW...nice gift. She may find that a regular stock is more comfortable than the pistol grip...and be less hesitant as a result.

                      Nice gift.
My husband used to brag to the other men: "tell them what I got you for Christmas, dear"...."a .45 semi-auto"...."and our anniversary?"..."a roto-tiller"...."and Easter?"...."power tools and a new canner". the wives would look daggers at me and the men would stare in disbelief when he proudly told them that I had threated to skin him alive if he 'wasted' money on anything so useless as diamonds and jewelery. (a couple even came over to see if it were really true & I not only confirmed it I showed them my sterling silver wedding ring - much cheaper than gold). Ah, it sure shocks the sheeple to see practicality win over consumerism. Wish he hadn't died on me.
So GOOD GIFT! Keep up the good work.
