We all talk about "how much ammo?" And honestly, it can become a hoarding issue for some of us- myself included. The more important question should be "how much TRAINING AND PRACTICE?"
You nailed me to a T on this... 20 years ago It was all I could do to keep a couple full mags in the house because I was always shooting everything I could.

I see little value in standing still at 25 yards and slowly shooting a target any more,
I know what you are talking about here and agree with what you ment. on the otherside of that coin I do think alot can be gained from bench shooting at 100 yards. getting BRASS down pat is invaluable... And pistol shots to just try to hold a tight group through the right eye at 10 yards... Spending more time on the range firing whatching wind effects, temp, sun angle is very valuable. I agree stupid blasting to blast is mostly just for fun but the guy that can keep 5 shots in a quarter at 100 is very valuable.

Thanks for the challenge!!! I am currious how close I will come to that come next Jan looking back. The best Resulution I have heard of for the year... ;o)

I have a saying at my business that I use for many things in life.

Practice makes permanence. Train wrong, learn wrong.

It doesn't matter how often you get to the range or running and gunning in your back 40. If you are doing it wrong and don't know or realize it, you will remember it wrong.

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

Use it or lose it right? Need to find some cheap 7mm. Hate to add to the discussion but I cant help it! Heard a story about a local police officer who was re-qualifying. Loaded his shotgun, racked it pulled the trigger... nothing. Re-racked it, pulled trigger...nothing. Range officer came over and discovered he had actually put the shells in backwards!!!

might need to work the shotgun more too :) That is not gonna happen, the rim of the brass wont allow it to chamber backwards

Well I'm good on my 40s for the year. Had to requalify yesterday for the security company I work for now. Ran 200 rds thru my XD since 1st of March. Used up about 100 yesterday. Being I carry a personal weapon, I have to supply the ammo for qualifiing....no problem, makes me use same ammo I would in real world. Anyway shot 351 out of 360 to make my mark. There were 47 of us out there. I'm 58 and 4 others older than me. 4 shot better than me. They were shooting company issued 38s with wadcutters. Best was 359.

Soooo...I keep a thousand rounds of 40. That would 10% for the year. I done run 300 so I'm ahead. My Mark III has seen maybe 100 rds this year. 10/22 maybe 250 rds. Not close yet....I keep a bunch of that...I ain't close to 10%. 12 ga has maybe 10 rds of 00 buck thru it so far. Not there yet. I keep about 500 of that. And my Howa 308 HB has about 40 thru it since 1st of year. I'm still working out the scope on it. 40 is about 5-6 %.

              I'm working on it.....(<;

                  How's everyone coming on this?

The boy is rapidly making our quota for .22

                  9mm isn't a problem.

I've found that the last couple times I've went down to the range, I've spent more time instructing the family than shooting much myself. I usually spend an afternoon down there when they are visiting grandma so that usually makes up for it.

My only complaint about the AK .22 the boy uses is that a sling setup doesn't seem to work well with it. Maybe it's just his height. We've been working transition to pistol with him and I've showed him to go to cradle using the left while drawing the pistol with the right. Still gotta work up a decent sling setup so he can work other transitions.

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I think that several of us Okies here are doing very well in that arena. We now have many that shoot regularly in IPSC as well as some who shoot the supplemental matches with different weapons and we have been to the range recently with each other to shoot rifles as well and several of us have gone with one another at on different occasions to shoot handguns. Shotgun may be lacking but I know starting Sept 1st that will rapidly change when dove season kicks in for a few of us and I will do some hog, quail hunting and maybe goose in a shotgun area too. My heavy caliber is coming along well and i have to keep it up for several upcoming hunts and am starting to stretch the ranges out. Blackpowder is lacking for me but I will get it together in september and archery/pellet gun is always practiced in the yard.
oh yeah still working on those ninja stars LOL :)

Well here we are at the 30th of December, how did people do with this concept?

I don't think I shot 100 rounds of shot shells this year, and most of them were blasting a tree limb down...

.22 I didn't shoot much of, but the boy shot a couple thousand rounds of in pistol and rifle.

Main calibers- 9mm, x39, were well over 10% this year, mainly with me but other family members used a good bit up as well.

.308 just barely, but it made the quota.

I hadn't shot distance in some time and started practicing that a little bit again. Couldn't believe it- I was rusty. Imagine that?? Not using that TOOL for a while, not exercising that muscle memory for a while and it wasn't perfect first time? Naaaah, come on now, I read somewhere on the internet that I could just dry fire, never spend a nickel on ammo, never actually use "MY PRECIOUS" hoard of ammo and all would be fine? What's up with that??? :) Who ever would have thought that not actually USING that tool would make my skills blunt a little bit????

Oh that's right, that was the whole point of this thread!!!

And yep guys and gals, it ain't gonna get any easier or cheaper in 2013, but I suspect the IMPORTANCE OF SKILL AT ARMS will become more important....

10%? I wish :) Buy 2 shoot 1 is my problem. My 14yr old at the range has the old guys going WTH? He operates like a operator ;) So proud.

Ammo is gettiing a little thin in the stores around here... And the main gun store in my area has been BAT-NUTS busy for the last 3 weeks! I was there on Saturday, (Dec 29, AFTER Christmas..) and the place was packed. Had to wait 40 minutes just to check out. The odd thing was that the attached firing range was almost empty. It's usually full on a Saturday. I think maybe everyone's wondering if they should preserve their ammo....

                                As

Normally as "the voice of reason" I am not gonna be today this aint the time to be letting lead fly at the range having fun. Your as good as your gonna get cause this will either pass by or we will be in up to our necks within weeks. You should have been stocking and training already IF you were real. To those that are new adults, i'm sorry you missed a great time and to those who are new and didnt do it well your bad. Get what you can and be quiet about it and hang on cause its gonna be a bumpy ride. Time and time again it has been said you will only have what you have on the day. There is nothing wrong with trying to get more now as long as it doesn't endanger you by doing so. S has TF in some respects to this and if passed in the halls of dummies tinfoilism may have that opportunity to happen. I can not believe I am saying this but there it is and how fast it is happening.
