Took son shooting

Took my 14 year old shooting today at range outside of town.

Took his lever action 22 Western Auto Revelation (made by Mossberg the 402 model)
put a new Tasco 4X scope on it because the original scopes seal is broken and fogged up.

He shot the Army 25 meter qualification target with it and hit 35 out of 40 at 25 meters all shots standing. Pretty good.

Then he shot his Ruger 10/22 stainless sith synthetica stock with Tech Sights on it and a military sling. 36 out of 40. Pretty good.

Then he shot his Ruger 22/45 bull barrel pistol at 10 yards and did really well.

Used a free gun rental from the rifle association Christmas party door prizes to rent a 1911 in 45ACP and bought a box of 50 S&B. One big hole in the 10 ring center of chest with just a few in 9 ring, and a palm size group in the head of target. Very good.

Even the staff and a couple of retired State Troopers were impressed with his shooting and his handling of the guns.

Now my boy wants a single action revolver to add to his collection.

He already has a 22pistol, 22 rifle, 12g shotgun (Remington tactical 1100) and a Springfield Armory service model 9mm.

He also wants his own AR or to use my M14 when it gets built.

I think I have created a monster, or just a shooting buddy for life. HAHA

I saw a on "Guns and Ammo TV" the other day a SA revolver chambered for .22 it had the classic Western styling... But I dont remember the "Make and Model" off hand.

I don't know if any one got to see the piece on the FOX station here in DFW area last night about a man mixing kids and guns. I just saw the teaser for it and from that is seemed they were after the guy for having kids in competition shooting on a supervised range with 22 target rifles. From what i could see the station was going after the liberal market in a big way. Sad to see this from FOX. My kids have been shooting from childhood and all three are excellent shooters and gun owners. I hope you keep taking your kids to the range every chance you have. Today my youngest boy is 21 and my oldest is in her thirties. they all go shooting with Dad still. As Admin said it is family time. GB

I have taken all five of mine shooting, and they're all good shots. I hammered in safety first, and went from there. None of them are afraid of guns, and see the utility of them. As for the single action, Heritage makes a .22 in cowboy style. I have one, and it's a lot of fun to shoot. I also have a couple of .45 long colts, (Ruger New Model Blackhawk) that are a literal and figurative blast to play with. <G> One of them came with a cylinder for .45 ACP, but that extra thousandths of an inch in diameter between the .45 LC and .45 ACP is enough to totally trash the accuracy. With the .45 LC, I was hitting beer cans at 50 yards. Again, cowboy style are fun to shoot, and because loading them takes a minute or two, you don't burn through ammo nearly as fast. A 9mm, 15 shot mag, with a speedloader can burn through a box of ammo in a hurry.... (Be warned, though, a box of .45 LC starts around $30 now, and go up from there. I have a friend who gets me reloads for $18 per box, so I've been shooting them. They're hotter than "Cowboy" loads, though.) Personally, I shoot better with the revolvers than I ever did with a semi. Oh well.

I looked at the Heritage 22's in the Farm & Home store yesterday. Did not like the new style safety on the left side of the hammer much.

Will still be looking around at some others, probably at the next local gun show Jan 21,22, 2012.

Time spent with a child learning "life's lessons" is priceless.

Safe handling and instruction of firearms removes the curiosity factor and instills responsibility.

Kids who grew up on farms or in the country knew this mindset.
