  • 1911 AMT "Hardballer"

I recently was reminded that I had access to a 1911 that I had forgotten about. It happens to be an AMT Hardballer and I know these have some bad memories. But the one I have access to shoot well (best I can remember from 10 years ago) but it was picky about the magazine. Most seemd not to pull up tight.

Anyone have suggestions on good but "cheap" magazines for 1911s?

    Thanks,

I was trying to remember if it used standard 1911 mags. If so places like Cheaper than Dirt, or look in ShotGun News for deals. CDNN is also a good source of mags.

Wilson Combat has some service mags for just under $18. I don't know what you consider cheap, but I have always been pleased with what I have purchased there.

Sure AMT had some probs, but heck, so has Kimber and a bunch of others.. I've known a few people that own or have owned them. I have an AMT Gov. that I bought for a little of nothing around 1980. This is just the basic 1911 that a Hardballer was built on. Mine had the two piece barrel that was prone to split, hence one of the bad raps. Sure enough, after eight or ten years, and a buttload ot two of rounds, mine split too. No biggie, by then it was toast anyway. Now to the good part. I had always wanted to build up a 1911 myself. Rather than just replace the barrel with a new drop-in, I went "whole hog" with a Briley spherical bushing and a pair if matched, fitted barrels in 45acp and .400 CorBon. I used it to qualify the first time for my CHL, and the instructor was impressed with it. The .400 is fun , but I wouldn't do that part again. The pistol is totally reliable. My .45 carry load is a handload right off the CorBon websight and a Hodgdon manual. A 185gr Sierra HP, 10.0 gr HS6, and Starline +P Brass, although it is NOT a hot load. I can buy it over the counter if I need to.
I run McCormic Shooting Star or Springfield mags with Wilson spring and follower kits in this and all of my 1911's. Other than the night sights, most of the other goodies are Wilson. The frame and slide have been "melted" and bead blasted. Along the way, I aquired a 4" .22 conversiion slide that pretty well matches the rest of the gun. This is my favorite handgun and I would not sell or trade it for anything, but would take yours off your hands if it turns out to be a pos :) Hope you enjoy yours.. old guy
