  • Tul Ammo Testing

    Today I fired 100 rounds of .40 S&W 180 Grain Tul Ammo through the S&W 4006 and a Springfield XDM .40.

I paid about $13 a box of 50, thinking well its cheap, it can be practice ammo. Heard that most cheap ammo is dirty and sometimes doesn't fire good. (I have a buddy that wont shoot anything thats less than $25 per 50 out of his Glock.

I was very impressed. Wasn't too dirty with residue on my hands. Shot clean and didn't dirty up the two guns too much, but we only fired 50 each.

I also tried out a new mag. Its a Pro Mag aftermarket S&W 4006 Mag. I was having trouble when I was loading a few then unloading them to get the spring worn. Squirted a small drop of oil in it and never had one misfire. I know its usually better to buy OEM stuff but this one gets a thumbs up.

The Tul Ammo was bought at Wally World by the way. I will be buying more of this for target practice. We shot at 50 paces and kept 90% of my shots within the 2.5 foot diameter circle we drew, hitting the bulls-eye twice!!! My dry firing exercises and dry aiming are helping tremedously. Also pulled out the 12 gauge and I love seeing what 00 Buck does to Targets...:)

This also was done under the influence of a Thanksgiving meal....lol

cool beans! I've had no issues with Tula after several thousand rds. in 9mm and about 500 in 5.56. I clean them glocks twice a yr wether they need it or not.
Promags well i give the thumbs down on them. I never bought any but every dang friend of mine tries and save a buck and we have nothing but grief and somehow it becomes my issue or they try to make it so anyway.
I hear triptomine makes folks have fun at the range! LOL

I bought a box of 50 .30 M1 carbine ammo from Cheaper than Dirt ( think I paid mid $11) to try in my carbine. Seems .30 ammo in general, is really up there in cost. Anyway, shot the box with no problems what so ever. Will be buying more as finances allow.

I put about 40 rnds of Tula 7.62x39 through my lovely SKS last week, and it shot like a charm. At $5 for 20 rounds, it was a lot cheaper than pistol ammo.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it was also accurate enough to hit a target about 18" wide at 300 yards with ironsights. Not a bad day for 7.62x39, especially from an SKS with ironsights.

          Owl,
Be careful with oil in the magazine, Its a lint/dirt magnet. Especially if its a back up cary magazine. Just a FYI.

I had a student in one class whos magizines were literally dripping in oil. (not implying thats what you did) and he kept droping his mags during the reload drills due to the ammount of oil now on his hands. He also would not listen on how to get a purchase on his spare mag which also contributed. Any how, thanks for the report on the Tula. I may try some.

Thanks for the pointer Robert J.

Yeah I did two very small squirts, like 1/10 of a second.

But, it was a gift so I couldn't complain. I will only buy OEM for now own.

We've shot a "fair" amount of the 9mm. Walmarts in this area just started carrying it earlier this year. Still prefer and buy the Winchester white box 100 round packs at $22. as they aren't 1/3 as dirty as the Tula seems to be. We probably shoot that 2 to 1 over the Tula.

No failures to fire that I remember in approx 2,500 rounds of it, dirty as all get out though, even gets your hands dirty loading it.

I have used Tula ammo in my AR's and my pistols including my Springfield XD, Beretta M9 and my 1911 and am l;ooking for some in 9x18 makarov.

So far I really like it. Not reloading so the metal case is ok and makes cleanup easy with a magnet on wheels like they use to clean up nails.

Thanks for the information. I'm always leery about trying cheap ammo, or stocking up on it anyway, but it would be nice to save some money, as the stuff I shoot is pretty high dollar.

Shot 50 rounds through my 40 today.
                      180 grain, fmj.
Did ok, seems like the blaser brass 180grain shoots a little tighter, but it could just be me.
I need to get more and test.

Bull- I know what you mean. I don't have any doubts that this would store well, but for some reason I tend to put it in the "training box" of ammo when I buy some.

The Federal 100 round red box bulk packs Spock posted about some time back at pretty comparable in price and are brass cased. I was bored after shooting Monday so I actually picked up brass for a friend ;)

No problem, the 2 ft long magnet with wheels on it at the local Lowes, Menards or Home Depot works great and quick if you keep the grass mowed well at the range.

I even have a friend now who reloads the steel case with carbide dies and swears by them. Gets all the empty steel cases he wants for free.

I did not know that was possible. I always assumed the steel was not reloaded due to problems with heat and expansion and brass could handle those better, I never would have guessed they where not reloaded due to equipment issues. I need to look into that!

I've been using Russian and eastern European ammo for practice for quite a while with very good results............... The ammo is DIRTY, but it goes BANG every time. Calibers I've tried incluldes .223, 9mm, and 40 cal. The pistol rounds, all functioned as intended.

I have had some issues with the lacqure coated .223 stuff sticking in the chamber during heavy firing schedules. However, the polymer coated cases so far have been fine. The Zinc plated ammo (Silver Bear) has been excellent as well.

While the rifle ammo in particular is not as accurate as domestic ammo it is good enough.
