  • Scope Questions

    Hi Folks,
I have been planning on putting optics on a couple of my old, short rifles. One is a Nagant, the other is an old 30-30 lever action. This time of year, I see young folks with cuts stitched up around their eyes from scopes from these short rifles, so I decided to put the scope farther down the barrel.

Are there special scopes made for this? I have other rifles with scopes, but recoil is not a problem on these.

    Thanks

There are scopes made for long eye relief. I suggest looking at their websites like BSA.
Scope bite is usually caused by improper hold of the rifle. Sometimes in order to make an weird shot angle it happens. It happened to me a few years ago as I lined up on a deer and began to slide off the ledge I was on due to the loose shale giving way. I made the shot but got cut by the 30-06. I'd do it again cause i made the shot!

On the nagant you can get a mount that fits in place of the rear sight. That should put the scope far enuf forward to not worry about recoil bite. Another thing I've seen people do is put a flip up cap on the scope, keeps you from creeping up on the scope.

sounds like the young folk need some more training.

The funny thing is, every year I see the eyebrow cut and I'll ask, "Winchester 94?" The answer is always yes.

I use my 30-30 strictly as my brush gun, when we do the walking part of our hunting season in Wisconsin. Now that I think of it, man its been a long time since I actually hunted up on the family farm in Wisconsin... :( All those years as a kid saying I couldn't wait to leave, and now I miss it more than anything. Don't you hate that?
