  • Improvised "Cut Shell" shotgun rounds

Anyone here ever tried this? I have a friend in the Marines who says his family has been doing this for generations.

Done it, don't recomend making a practice of it but it's good to have in your mental toolbox. I know a guy :) who spent a few years in germany where all he could get was #9s for a while back in the day and pulled it out of his mental toolbox while living there for his home defense.

DON'T DO IT! Trust me, your eyes, ears (or worse), and shotgun are all working better right now than they might be after trying some cute trick like this. If you think you're gonna need slugs, buy some.

While I've seen videos of this working, allow me to point out a minor detail here that some might miss. There is a forcing cone in your shotgun, and it is designed to give the plastic hull of the cartridge room to get out of the way so that the payload can go down the barrel. Cutting shells means that the front portion of the plastic hull will stay with the payload, and it will be bigger than your barrel. With a charge of powder going off behind it, something has to give. Either the payload gets squeezed down and goes down the barrel very tightly, or it doesn't. In which case the force of the explosion is released somewhere else. This most likely means somewhere near your face. Regardless, this probably isn't good for your shotgun even if it does work.

By all means, keep it in your mental toolbox. Just put a warning label on it that says: "This may likely hurt you more than your target"
