  • Your opinions about slugs

A buddy and I went to the range and he brought along some riffled slugs to try out. We were pegging a man sized target at 50 yards and you could tell from the sound that they were hitting way harder than the riffle rounds

What do you guys think about these?

Are they worth stocking up on?

Yes, get some slugs. Great for medium game out to 100 - 120 yds.

But just to set the record straight, your hearing is only perceiving a harder hit. The amount of material displaced (punctured, if you will) is going to sound louder. Try shoving a pencil through a sheet of taut paper, then do the same with a 2" dowel. The dowel will sound louder, although the velocity may be lower. That said, I don't want to catch either a slug or a rifle round...:)

Generally speaking, I don't like them, and think they should be killed by pouring salt on them...
        oh,
        you mean for shotguns!
        uh yeah!
        stock up on em!
I like winchester 2 3/4" and federal 2 3/4" the 3" slugs give me a bruise if I shoot multiple times.

To me the 12 gauge shotgun (mine is an Ithaca 37 Deerslayer with 20" sulg barrell and 28" imp cyl) is the absolutely best "if you only had one weapon" in any survival situation.

A one inch slug will take down any North American game animal and depending on shot placement, usually with only one hit.

A rifled slug is accurate to well beyond 200 meters. Here's a Hickok45 video from YouTube:

When i first saw this (last Spring) I thought, "well, it's Hickok45 and he has access to all kinds of ammo and weapons and has a great range" but I thought I would try it at my local range.

So, having saved up enough money to buy 50 Winchester 2 3/4" one ounce slugs, I went to my local range.

At one hundred yards, I fired the first one at point of aim (POA) and it was about 4 inches low. I then put the next four almost on top of each other in the bull.

Patting myself on the back, I then changed to 200 yards and used the method of aim that Hickok45 described and then put five rounds within a 12 inch circle and ended up having several guys standing behind me doiing the "ooooh and aaaahhhh" thing.

          I couldn't believe it.

My point being is that if a trucvk load of marauders turns into your driveway a couple of hundreds of yards away, you could impress the heck out of them very quickly.

I needed to mount an EOtech on my Model 37.

I believe many of today's social ills and political party bickering could be solved by the simple implementation of legalized dueling.

In my Extreme Combat Hapkido courses, I teach combat pistol, shotgun, and carbine. As a prepper, when using a shotgun, always have a combination of bird, buck, and slugs. Slugs are great for defense and hunting. They do not replace a rifle, but are extremely effective a close ranges of 100 yards and less. At 50 yards you can place shots within a couple of inches.

Stock up an shotgun shells. As stated store up a combination of bird, buck, and slugs.
