  • Shooting barricades/obstacles

OK so I've built a few fun ones. I should take some pics. One is a really odd shaped one where you can engage standing, kneeling, modified prone, etc. from both sides. The wife calls it "the truck" cause it evidently looks like a truck. Some have said it's a hard obstacle to work around.

So I have some excess cut pieces of plywood from a homestead project. Need some ideas for various barricades, shooting obstacles, etc. for practice/training.

The harder to utilize the better, weird shooting positions, weird angles, etc. basically the more challenge to the obstacle the better.

Descriptions are great, pics are awesome, the really awesome ones I'll hook the poster up with something from JRH Enterprises for the idea- it doesn't have to be your original idea.

I need to make good use of this scrap plywood and add some new challenges to the range.
    TIA

how about every day stuff. Park Benches, mail boxes, large pots/planters, poles, tractors, etc.

OH you should make a V-TAC barricade!!!

Two pieces of plywood four feet by one foot mounted on stands twelve inches off the ground. Set them about four feet apart and then try shooting at a traget under both of them while prone. About the same as firing from under a vehicle.

You can also try the above while laying on your back. Not as easy as it would seem.

I have also used a blue barrel with both ends cut off. The target was offset so that you could not see it from the middle. You would have to move to one side of the barrel and shoot at a angle. The question is which side of the barrel is the target set up and how fast can you put good rounds into the target.

            gives you-

corners/angles to work with both in the ports and outside edges
lets you go standing, kneeling, mod prone, prone, urban prone.
the circles can be ports instead of slits.
I figured the slits would work for harder angles.
Left and right so you can transition train.

may take two full sheets but could be hinged to fold up.
or make it a half sheet...

            YMMV

you know its an awesome picture :)

Here is something that we use in conjunction with barricades. It can have threat or non threat targets attached, made to bob back and forth or positioned with a stop to pop out and stay or with a kick stand to appear once for just a brief moment. http://s246.photobucket.com/albums/g...t=MVI_0916.mp4 Trigger can be done manually with someone pulling the string or set with trip wire type trigger or knock down steel plate, etc.

....... and Protus..... it is an awesome pic!

These are all nice and all but I have yet to see or here of anyone shooting from manholes with the lid partly covering it or shooting from a slit with cover just above it like a covered spider hole or inside colverts or caves. Shooting from theses types of things will add the noise factor to the shooting skills as well. JMHO

"The truck" as the wife calls it, is kinda sorta similar to what you drew Protus. I need to take a pic of it and post it. You can shoot modified prone off of both sides but the right side is an open hole in the bottom of it. So to utilize the right side of the cover you have to go modified prone or lay on your side (think it's called "Urban prone") type deal. You can kneel, stand up and left and right off of it.

I started putting 8 foot sections of partition walls together and covering half with scrap plywood, half with old vinyl my buddy gives me. They get really heavy with all plywood. A couple of 4x4's in the ground like we used to do , put a partition section up to it, drive the nails halfway, tie in another partition section here and there and be able to build small kill houses and change the setup every time with minimal effort.

We do something a little different, but still challenging. You stand facing away from the range with a shotgun (empty chamber) while the 'bad guy' and 'good guy targets are arranged at various distances. At 'GO' you have 5 seconds to turn, load and take out the 'bad guy' only.
What a long, strange trip it's been.....

This is what I built today for 2 gun stage. The door opens when the steel target falls. I am also going to make small boxes near the hinges that will hold clay pigeons to "simulate" shooting the hinges off. I cant afford to repair a real door hinge every shooter so it's a compromise. I will post them once I get them built.
They will engage 3 "hinges" then engage the steel with a shotgun and when the doorway opens they will place their shotgun in an awaiting barrel, then step thru the doorway into an offset shooting box (dont want to teach them bad habits like standing in a doorway) and engage some more steel and one paper "no shoot" partially covering a shoot with a handgun.

Here are pictures of the "Hinge" boxes that will hold the clay pigeons. The straws are used to hold them up and you can blow thru them with minumal cleanup.

My improvised "hinges" and cheapie method of holding them in long enough to get gunned down. Today is a good test, winds blowing 30+
