They are reputedly somewhat more accurate than the AK, they are certainly comparable in rate of fire up until reload time comes around, and extra ammo in stripper clips is definitely lighter than in magazines. However, the one BIG thing they (most of them) have going for them is that from any sort of distance they don't really look like one of those evil demon assault rifles. At a quick glance they can pass for a normal hunting rifle, and that's less likely to attract unfavourable attention. The grey man approach has its advantages.

I thought about buying one of these just to test it out

I have a Yugoslavian that I absolutely love. thinking of taking the grenade laucher off. Less weight, and I'm never going to come across a grenade to shoot out of it.

I don't have one, but if I ever bought an SKS, how difficult is it to remove the bayonet?

The bayonet is easy to remove its usually a screw. The sk is an excellent system, bulky but reliable. They can be fired hard and without mercy for many years with the proper cleaning. They are reletively easy to field strip also. Usually a bit more accurate than the ak because of barrel length. I've been using tapco aftermarket polymer extended mags without a hitch also.

It also has a bit to do with the way the bolt on the SKS locks vs the AK

At least that is what I've been told

Shot my first deer with an SKS. With no exaggeration what so ever run 10k through various SKS's without a single parts breakage. Wish I could say the same for my beloved AR's.

In my opinion everyone who has a rifle should own at least one. It will never fail you. Even at today's prices, they border on "disposable" if you find yourself in a position that your rifle may get lost or confiscated.

If you happen accross a Model D, you have found the holy grail. These were set up from the factory to use AK mags. I have one of these also and it works flawlessly too.

They are not perfect. The triggers universally suck swamp water. The sights are crude and the rear sight too narrow. They are normally 2 to 3 moa rifles, which is better than most AK's, but worse than most AR's.
