  • Arsenal Sgl 21 or Ruger Mini-14

I have been putting off this post for fear of starting a big to-do, this isn't my intent.
I have come into an unexpected $1000. I thought that I was going to buy a ruger mini-14 tactical, and 3 mags. But I have really been looking at the Arsenal sgl21, reviews and suchlike on the net.

I have not owned either in the past.

My thoughts are the .223 I can carry more ammo for the same weight, it's available, etc.
7.62x39 has a bit more 'punch' and thus possibly more felt recoil (not really a concern).

Like I said I have never fired or operated an AK type rifle, so I don't know how easy they are to clean, clear jams , etc, etc. (The same for the mini in truth).

The AK several of my friends have various models, so they could possibly help with learning how to field strip, etc.

I will place a scope on which ever rifle I get.

Most of my shooting experience is with bolt action rifles, and a lot of pistol shooting while I was on Active Duty.

The only reason I'm not considerring an AR is stricly price.

    So what are your thoughts.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Try changing the mags on both models first and see what you like better. I have other opinions but it comes down to preference

Personally I would go with arsenal myself. I've owned a couple mini's in the past and numerous AK's. Just like AK's more. If you are considering the mini because of the caliber..... there are AKs chambered in .223 too. Personally I would opt for 5.45x39 over a .223 AK though. JMHO.

Arsenal Sgl 21 is my vote.

Arsenal due to better parts availability, cheaper working magazines, cheaper ammo.

Ergonomics are similar with both weapons, a fact that certain black rifle lovers that scream "ergonomics! Ergonomics!" are quick to forget ;)

I've owned a couple Mini 14's. Never really fell in love with them. Sold both when I needed cash. If I still stocked .223 I'd buy another one at a cheap price. However that would mean moving into another caliber and I've scaled down number of calibers for logistics reasons.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll go with the SGL21. I may have to put it off as I had to spen $800 for truck repairs today. But still might work out this month.

Clean an AK? Just fire it more and that'll keep it clean.
What a long, strange trip it's been.....

i'd get the AK. for a g spot you should be able to buy the rifle get 10 mags from AIM and 500 rounds of ammo. AK mags are 1/3 the cost of ruger mags

Field stripping is super easy on an AK.

Clearing malfunctions is 'caveman simple' on an AK.

In fact, that is one of the many reasons I chose one.

I also second considering the AK in 5.45 x 39 flavors, if carrying more ammo is a primary concern for you.
Me, I prefer the penetration of the 7.62 x 39 for my area......which is heavy woodlands.
