  • Ulitmak AK-47 Mount

A friend and I were talking about optic mounts for the AK platform. I remember hearing awhile back about the Ultimak mount but neither of us have any experience with them. The bad part is that in this area noone even carries them. Before I drop $100 on the mount I need to find out how well they work.

One concern that he had was the lack of ribs on the front of the gas tube. Granted it's made from t6 aluminum but how does it hold up to after the gas piston cycling several thousand times? Another concern just like with all mounts is how well does it hold zero? And does the set-up allow for co-opting the iron sights with something like the Burris XTS-135? http://www.burrisoptics.com/xts135.html

    Can anyone help me out?

    Buy one.

I've ran one on a Polytech since late 2007. I've run ACOG's on there, PVS14's and a Sig Sauer Red dot.

This particular gun is one of my main training weapons. Realistically since the mount was put on there the rifle has seen probably 15,000 rounds through it. In 2009 alone I attended 17 classes and taught more than a few private ones. 15K might seem like a lot in that time frame, but it isn't much over that time frame.

Not a single problem with the mount, it's dead on solid.

Some people have issues with the "forward scout position" when you put an ACOG, etc. at that spot. My thoughts, man up and train with the darn thing, you get used to it quick ;) Also, it tends to help you keep your head up a bit from the rifle versus the standard head bent over the stock position like with a standard scope (think sniper type scope).

It's an excellent mount and for AK's that don't have a side of receiver attachment, the only good option.

I just bought an Ultimak last week and it come monday. $88.20 from Aimsurplus. I ordered thursday night, they shipped it Friday via USPS 1st class with tracking, and I had it Monday AM. I know the ribs you are talking about. the ribs are what align the piston as it enters the gas block. the ribs are INTERNAL on the Ultimak. rather than be made of pressed/stemped steel the ultimak is machined Aluminum.

As for the XTS-135 I do know you'll need ultimaks low 30mm ring for AImpoint m2/m3 to get a cowitness. the big question is can the XTS-135 handle the heat from the ultimak?

fyi I went with the bushnell trs-25 which is a 25mm micro red dot.

A lack of a decent AK optics mounts back in the early 2000's is what pushed me away from AK's and into AR's & FAL... It seems that the Ultimak is a decent solution, although I dislike things that require u-shaped clamps to mount it. A good Aimpoint Micro red-dot on that would be nice... Now convinced of the benefits of a good red-dot or magnified optic, I could never willingly go back to iron sights as a PRIMARY...

I really like the goodies that are for AK's now days, but I am now over a decade invested in the AR15 platform, with plenty of parts, mags & ammo acquired, so I can't justify selling (in this economy) my AR stuff and buying like a newbie stuff for an AK platform... Just like with the FAL, all the good stuff is long bought up and surplus is rare...

I will add another voice to the value of the AK Ultimak gas tube rails. Holds zero perfectly fine and is known to be durable.

I have one and recommend it. I think it's the best with a red dot sight (and suggest a QD red dot mount). I also use it with a QD mount for a weaponlight.

Have never used one, but seem to be hearing the Texas Weapons Systems Dog Leg Rail as the preferred option for mounting something closer to the eye (like an ACOG or other magnified optic) since it replaces the top cover.

So I tend to think of it this way, right now:

          Red Dot? Ultimak

          Magnified Optic? TWS
