  • The .22 autorifle is really all you need for shtf.

A pocket 9mm is nice, for nowadays, if you ccw it. If you don't, however, a $75, used .22 autorifle will suffice just fine for home defense, if you know what to do with it. If it's shtf, the pistol will have almost no role at all, because everyone will be carrying a true fighting rifle, which makes the handgun look sick by comparison.

If you don't stick to either very thick woods or darkness when shtf, you wont last long, irregardless of what gun you have. If you do know enough to do the above, you won't need or profit from more than the .22 autorifle, as long as you use subsonic ammo in it and mount a sound suppressor on its muzzle.

He was gone the other night. As fate happened, I was traveling during the day and he was able to rack up 37 posts before I got back to a computer. Couple other mods were working or traveling during that same time period. Very weird fluke as usually a couple mods/admins are always here, sometimes in "stealth" mode (oooooooohh) LOL

Lungs has it absolutely right (IMO).
Go for cover so deep that even a hound could not follow.
Tactical gear weighs a TON ... Mobility and stealth will trump, with ease.
Fiskars pruning sheers are well worth the weight.
Me? Henry US Survival Rifle (custom tuned) ...
Read the Aircrew Survival Pamphlet ... Very Funny! ... BUT ... YES ... Think like a downed pilot !
Don't really need a surpressor ... Use subsonics to hunt (single shot mode ... they will not cycle, in the Henry AR-7)
Use Std. Velocity "CCI AR-Tactial 22LR" if you MUST fight. Keep seperate mags for ea. type of load.
I even have 50 rds pf Super Collibri (no powder...just primer + Pellet) ... for expedient bore-sighting/zero (make NO noise).
You need to carrry as much Water and Rations as possible ... I'd much rather have 8 pounds of jerky/almonds/Mainstays than an M4 + Mags!
You can't carry all my gear, plus an M4 + mags ... Forget Body Armor ... Even the Henry is hardly worth the extra weight ... MAY-BE.
A decent tarp will catch rain and morning condensation ... protect yer tent/bivy from UV (UV has killed many of my tents/bivys) .
You ARMY guys ... Ever leave a light tent set up for weeks or months? ... How long will a bivy last, usimg it EVERY day ?
How much does 4 mags (loaded) of 5.56mm or 6.8mm weigh ? ... How much does a brick of 22LR weigh ?
You gonna hunt rabbits with an M4 ? ... Rotza Ruck wid DAT !

Me? ... If I find some decent water, I might want to carry (yet) an extra gallon or two (in addition to the SIX liters I carry).

Six liters, plus the bladders/canteens is 15 pounds ! Anyone feeling me?

500 rounds of 22LR (300 rds of that as subsonic) will get you WAY down the road (and across private domains) ... better.

            ARMY guys ? ... Old Timers ? ... Chime !

STEALTH and MOBILITY ... SUPREME STEALTH and HIGH MOBILITY.

The Rambos will dwndle, completely, in a month or two ... You might join a surviving gang, after that ...
... There will be LOTS of M4s, just lying around. Bury/hide any CF ammo you find, tho. Remember where you left it.

Well I agree the .22 has its place....i am unsure if it would be the only gun I had...If thats all I could afford then I would make do with a .22 only...although alot of people have been killed by 22's...and there are alot hot 22's out there...I definetly would want a .22 pistol as a back up though....the key then would be to stay away from any major engagements and wait out the Rambos as Briar Wabbit stated

AHHH, the mandatory ".22 is all you need" thread. Seems like every forum I go to has at least one posted by the ill equipped person.

I agree that a .22 rifle has it place in your survival armory, but not as a primary battle rifle. As for the point of very deep cover, unless you plan on hiding in a bush, soiling your underwear, and not eating or drinking anything, some movement is required. It's hard to be stealthy with your pants around your ankles and a roll of TP in your hand.

                Just an old man's .02

lmao, yall crack me up but I can't dissagree with the .22 rhetoric. it's perfect for small game but thats about all I'll be relying on it for. If everyone is carrying a "true fighting rifle" then a .22 is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. go ahead and poke a hole in me with that .22 especially if it's going all the way through. Even if it kills me in a couple days, you'll be dead n the spot with my inferior .45 pistol. It's not about show, it's about damage done.

                      Hi,
Guess I gotta say something. I wonder about, consider the possiblilites, worry about, and pray for the the future. How is civilization going to end? will it be fast or slow? Will the marauding hoards make their way to my little corner of paradise? I don't know, but I THINK it is lesss likely that I'll die by a bullet than that I'll run out of whatever medications I'm taking. Less likely I'll be overrun by a gang of thugs and more likely I won't be able to afford the gas to go to town. Less likely I'll be hiding in the woods and more likely I'll be spending hours and days working in the garden.

Whatever, a .22 would be useful, but so will a 30-06 and a .45. All depends on what comes up.

I hope we're all wrong and things just keep getting better!...............But I'm not betting on it.

                      good luck,

As much as I like my 10/22, if the shtf, it will be strapped to my wife's pack while I walk around with my Arsenal AK-47 and G22. My wife can carry the 12 gauge. Honestly though, I don't plan on us walking around unless it is an absolute necessity or last resort
