does anybody own one of these?

I do not, but it lacks several things that I consider important in an AR, I wouldn't touch them (unless you just want a toy.)

A friend of mine does, whats up? He likes it and it shoots decent, so far no issues but he's still in the low hundreds on rounds thru it. I'm a military guy so i stick with them but it's preference, i won't know the difference if i'm hit and neither did the coyote.

I have the Basic M&P 15 with the carry handle.
I've put about a thousand rounds through it without one Failure to Feed or Failure to Eject.
            Good rifle, no complaints.

matt or fido - is there any issues with not having a forward assist or a dust cover? can a dust cover be added to it?

I dont think you can add a dust cover. The forward assit comes in handy if conditions are dirty but it can be overcome with skill and practice if you use your finger/thumb (only if the rifle is cool) to push the bolt forward or something else like a tool if needed in an emergency.

Here is a video demonstration that might help. My vote is stay Military and leave the sporters to coyote hunters and gun club commandos but if you go this way, train so you don't fail when/if it does so you will better than them.

                    Well done Matt!

It's no secret I'm not an AR fan. However in all the jams I had with my AR's and all the jams I've seen them have of other people's, I can't think of one that might have been solved with the forward assist. In other words, I'm gonna venture to say that not having a forward assist isn't THAT big of a liability for that weapon.

I understand the "SPORTS" teaching, but what's wrong with a simple tap rack?

the barrel is 4140 plain steel. do not ever buy an AR15 that is to be used for defense that doesn't have a 5.56 mm nato chamber and chrome lining. its very very important for reliablity.

$709 suggested retail price? i'd look around on the used market. I know for a fact the moderator of the projets forum Noble has a barely used Ar-15 that she'd like to sell. Its a CMMG upper with a 4150 barrel that has a 1-7 inch twist, chrome lined, and 5.56mm chamber. She's got some mags and a really nice padded case. The lower is a factory Bushmaster with bushmaster internals the stock is 6 position M4. I think that rifle has mabe 200 rounds of centerfire down the pipe. message her or me if you are interested.

the one and only time i used to the Forward Assist on the Ar-15 I wound up with a case stuck in the chamber. The 5.56 has pracitally no case taper which results in two things:

                        1. you get a nice neat straight magazine thats easy to work with

                        2. a round that tends to drag in the chamber when going in and out-which is why you want that chrome lining. carbon, soot, dirt, sand etc doesn't stick to chrome as well as it does to plain steel.

if the round didn't seat fully it didn't seat for a reason. the ammo is dirty or damaged or the rifle needs some form of maintence.

I've used it about 5 times in my lifetime that i can remember i think. The jams I see are usually avoidable and me and my son watch them all the time at the ranges but ours run. when folks get away from community equipment less bad stuff happens. When folks quit changing this and that, because guru says, less bad stuff happens. The military version of the rifle works, I've owned several and the ones i dont were passed down or sold to friends and still run.
OFF THE SOAPBOX and back to discussion
SPORTS is taught because the double feed, most common failure in the Military followed in a close second by the failure to chamber is due to overused and under maintained magazines and the tap/rack/bang wont work.

I would not have an AR that does not have a chromed barrel, forward assist or a dust cover. I also wouldn't have an AR without an MP tested bolt. I'm sure there are some other things that I would spot on that AR if I went through it. It reminds me of the Bushmaster Carbon 15, but at least that had extreme light weight going for it. It is what it is, a purpose built bottom of the line AR to give people a low price point. You get what you pay for.

The foward assist can be used to ease the bolt foward when you have to quietly put a round in the chamber..Instead of pulling back on the T handle and letting go , pull back and ease the bolt forward to lightly and quietly chamber a round then push on the FA to seat the bolt and round.
