  • Backpack & rifle

So on my recent trip I tried different ways to carry a rifle and my backpack. I found that if I put the sling on first then the backpack, it was hard to adjust the sling or lay down the rifle. If I put the pack on first and then the sling, if I needed to drop the pack I had to take the sling off.
I'm looking for a sling with maybe a quick detachable buckle or something along those lines. Seams like I'm always working on my gear.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Thats why some in the Military carry those cross body type slings that just go over the head/neck. It keeps the rifle up and in a semi ready posisiton and allows you to dump the pack if needed quickly or retain it and still aim even in the prone.
We have an instructor here in OKC that touts if you show up to his class with the cross body ninja slings he will cut them up and throw them away! LOL
The guy has no experience outside his small world and is one who believes that his toolbox is the ONLY kind. Everyone has different needs. Just like wearing a holster with a pack that has a belly strap.

There are quite a few slings of the type you seek. Are you talking about your standard bolt action hunting rifle?

No I was carrying a ruger 10-22 with an ATI tactical stock. I think I'll look for one of the single point slings like Matt was describing.

A one point sling only connects to the rear of the rifle and does not provide muzzle control when you release your grip. There are 2 point slings with quick adjust and quick release features should you need to get out of it. If you haven't seen one they are worth a look.

            Thanks Rascal, any brand recommendations?

May favorite is the Vickers Tactical from Blue Force Gear. There are other brands too if you go internet shopping.

I've always just used a swatch of velcro on my shoulder and a matching swatch on the GI sling, to carry the gun upside down on the nonfiring shoulder. the velcro keeps the sling from slipping off of my shoulder, but a quick jerk on the rifle frees it up for shouldering to fire.
